Former South Africa captain Faf du Plessis has decided to skip the IPL 2026 auction, ending a 14-season association with the league to participate in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) instead. The 39-year-old made the announcement through a statement on his social media accounts, describing the decision as “big” and “emotional.”
Du Plessis, who has played 154 IPL matches and won two titles with Chennai Super Kings, said the league had been an important part of his cricketing journey. He expressed gratitude for his time in India, acknowledging the friendships and experiences he gained over the years. Though stepping away this season, he left the door open for a potential return to the IPL in the future.
The former Proteas batter was part of Delhi Capitals in IPL 2025, scoring 202 runs in nine games and standing in as captain for two matches in Axar Patel’s absence. However, DC released him ahead of the 2026 auction. Overall, du Plessis is the fourth-highest run-scorer among overseas players in IPL history, having also represented CSK, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, and Rising Pune Supergiants.
Du Plessis said his decision to join the PSL was motivated by a desire to take on a fresh challenge and explore a new cricketing environment. He previously featured in the PSL between 2019 and 2021 for Peshawar Zalmi and Quetta Gladiators.
His move comes at a time when the upcoming PSL season (April–May) is scheduled to overlap with the IPL (March–May), making simultaneous participation impossible.
Du Plessis highlighted his excitement about returning to Pakistan's cricketing circuit and experiencing its hospitality, calling it an opportunity to grow as a player in a new environment.
