South Africa Opt to Bowl First in Darwin T20I as Head, Hazlewood Return for Australia
South Africa have won the toss and elected to bowl first in the opening T20I of the three-match series against Australia, marking the return of international cricket to Darwin after a 17-year hiatus. A sell-out crowd is in attendance for the highly anticipated clash, which serves as crucial preparation for both teams ahead of next year’s T20 World Cup.
South Africa field a pace-heavy XI with four seamers — Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi, teenager Kwena Maphaka, and Corbin Bosch — supported by a spin quartet that includes Aiden Markram (who will also captain the side), George Linde, Senuran Muthusamy, and Dewald Brevis. The team is experimenting with a new-look top order, with Markram opening alongside Ryan Rickelton and 19-year-old Lhuan-dre Pretorius listed at No. 3.
Australia, coming off a dominant 5-0 T20I sweep of West Indies, have made a few key changes. Star quicks Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins are being rested, but Josh Hazlewood returns to lead the pace attack, while Travis Head comes back into the XI and will open alongside captain Mitchell Marsh. Marsh confirmed this pairing is the likely long-term combination heading into the 2026 World Cup.
Glenn Maxwell, listed at No. 7, adds further depth to a formidable Australian batting line-up. Tim David, who smashed a maiden T20I century in St Kitts last month, retains his place at No. 5, with Josh Inglis and Cameron Green rounding out the top order. Mitchell Owen slots in at No. 6, offering an all-round option along with Maxwell and Head. Marsh and Green, however, will not bowl in this match.
Nathan Ellis and Ben Dwarshuis keep their spots in the pace department, with legspinner Adam Zampa completing the bowling attack. Matt Short is unavailable for the first two matches due to a side strain, with Aaron Hardie brought in as cover but not included in the starting XI.
This match also marks the first meeting between Australia and South Africa since the Proteas’ historic victory over Australia in the World Test Championship final at Lord’s in June.
