Bracey Stars, Boorman Holds Nerve as Gloucestershire Edge Leicestershire in One-Day Cup Thriller

James Bracey’s commanding 96 and a nerveless finish from youngster Tommy Boorman powered Gloucestershire to a thrilling three-wicket win over Leicestershire in the Metro Bank One Day Cup at the Seat Unique Stadium.

Chasing 286, the hosts were cruising at one stage thanks to a century opening stand between Bracey and Cameron Bancroft (40), but a five-wicket burst from seamer Alex Green sparked a dramatic collapse that set up a tense finish. It took a mature, unbeaten 38 from Boorman in just his third List-A match – alongside Craig Miles (18* off 9) – to steer Gloucestershire home with nine balls to spare.

The eighth-wicket pair added 35 runs off just 18 balls, sealing victory in the penultimate over when Miles launched the winning six, capping a dramatic contest that saw both sides enjoy extended periods of control.

Earlier, Leicestershire had recovered from a disastrous start – reduced to 22 for 3 by Josh Shaw’s incisive opening burst – to post 285 for 7, thanks largely to a composed century from skipper Peter Handscomb (107 off 125) and a fluent 61 from Ben Cox. The pair added 115 for the fifth wicket to pull their side out of early trouble after Shaw’s 3 for 40 had left the Foxes reeling.

Shan Masood (35) had helped stem the early collapse before falling to Ben Charlesworth. With Gloucestershire’s spinners struggling to keep control, Cox and Handscomb rotated the strike smartly before accelerating in the latter overs. Handscomb reached his ninth List-A hundred with a six over long-off, while Liam Trevaskis’s unbeaten 30 off 22 helped add 61 runs in the final five overs.

Set 286 to win, Gloucestershire got off to a measured start, but Bracey soon took charge. He brought up his half-century off 58 balls and dominated an opening stand of 105 with Bancroft, who was eventually caught behind off Chris Wright.

Ollie Price (29) played a supporting role before falling to Green, who then removed Bracey – caught at deep square leg – to trigger a collapse. Gloucestershire slipped from 172 for 2 to 250 for 7 as Green’s 5 for 52 rattled the middle order, including the double strike of Jack Taylor and Zaman Akhter in the 46th over.

With 36 still required and just three wickets in hand, the pressure was on, but Boorman held his nerve, showing maturity beyond his years. He struck two boundaries and two sixes, including a vital one off Trevaskis, before Miles finished it with a towering hit down the ground.

Speaking after the match, Boorman said, "It was about staying calm and backing ourselves. Craig [Miles] was brilliant at the other end. We knew a couple of big hits could swing it our way."

The win keeps Gloucestershire in the hunt for knockout qualification, while Leicestershire – despite a fine individual performance from their captain – were left to rue missed chances and a lack of support for Handscomb’s heroics.
