Whiteley Powers Derbyshire to Crushing 127-Run Victory Over Nottinghamshire

Ross Whiteley led a dominant Derbyshire Falcons performance with a blistering 80 off 52 balls as they crushed East Midlands rivals Nottinghamshire Outlaws by 127 runs in the Metro Bank One-Day Cup at the Central Co-op County Ground.

Whiteley’s explosive knock, which included eight fours and four sixes, headlined Derbyshire’s imposing total of 341 for 8, their highest-ever List A score against Nottinghamshire. He was well-supported by Amrit Basra (72 off 54) and Caleb Jewell (60), as the Falcons showcased depth and firepower in a clinical batting display.

After being reduced to 161 for 5, Derbyshire surged back into control through a destructive 100-run partnership off just 46 balls between Whiteley and Zak Chappell, who smashed a rapid 47 off 26 deliveries. The hosts ransacked 72 runs in the final six overs, with Rob Lord’s final over going for 31 runs, the most Derbyshire have ever scored in a single over in List A cricket.

Despite a gritty 58 from Ben Slater, Nottinghamshire’s chase never gained momentum. Derbyshire’s bowlers, led by Ben Aitchison (4 for 34), struck at regular intervals to bowl the visitors out for 214, sealing a comprehensive win.

Jewell set the tone early, attacking James Hayes for three boundaries in one over, but Brett Hutton (1 for 40) kept things tight, removing Harry Came for 15. Jewell and Yousaf Bin Naeem added 56 before both fell in quick succession – Bin Naeem caught behind for 29 and Jewell bottom-edging a pull.

The middle order wobbled briefly, with Brooke Guest dismissed by a stunning one-handed catch from Tom Moores and Martin Andersson bowled attempting a sweep. However, Basra and Whiteley steadied the innings before launching an all-out assault.

Basra, playing just his second List A match, impressed with a mix of power and composure, clearing the ropes twice before falling to a sliced shot off Lord. Whiteley then took over, hammering boundaries at will, and was only dismissed after the damage was done.

Nottinghamshire's reply began poorly with Haseeb Hameed falling early to Aitchison. While Slater and Jack Haynes briefly counter-attacked, wickets continued to fall under scoreboard pressure. Chappell, Andersson, and Aitchison all chipped in with timely strikes, with Moores and Slater departing within four overs to all but end the Outlaws’ hopes.

It was a statement win for Derbyshire, who showed both resilience and aggression, while Nottinghamshire were left reeling after an all-round defeat.

Match Summary:

Nottinghamshire 214 all out (Slater 58; Aitchison 4-34)
