Mo Bobat Appointed Director of Cricket at London Spirit Ahead of New Era

London Spirit have appointed former England performance director Mo Bobat as their new Director of Cricket, marking a key step in the Hundred franchise’s transition under new part-ownership by the Silicon Valley-based "Tech Titans" consortium.

The announcement comes after the sale of a 49% stake in the Lord's-based franchise to the tech investment group, one of six equity deals recently approved by the ECB. While significant branding changes are expected ahead of the 2026 season, the team has chosen to retain the London Spirit name—a nod to the capital’s "energy, diversity, and cricketing heritage."

Bobat, who has played a major role in shaping England’s high-performance strategy over the past decade, is currently also the Director of Cricket at Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the IPL. He will officially take up his new position with Spirit in October 2025, bringing dual experience from both international and franchise cricket.

“It’s an honour to join London Spirit at such an exciting time,” Bobat said. “The opportunity to shape the cricketing future of this franchise, working with MCC and our new partners, the Tech Titans, is incredibly exciting. I’m looking forward to building something special—on and off the field.”

London Spirit chairman Julian Metherell called the appointment a major milestone for the franchise.

“Today marks a significant moment for London Spirit. Mo Bobat brings unmatched expertise and vision to the role of Director of Cricket, and we’re thrilled to welcome him. At the same time, retaining the London Spirit name reflects our belief in the identity that’s been built—one that resonates with the capital, our fans, and our values. We now look ahead to a new era, with fresh energy and clear purpose.”

The franchise is expected to reveal updated branding before next season, potentially incorporating MCC’s iconic egg-and-bacon colours, aligning Spirit more closely with its historic Lord’s base.

On the field, the London Spirit men’s team, coached by Justin Langer, had a rocky start to their 2025 campaign, collapsing to 80 all out in their season opener in front of their new owners. However, they rebounded swiftly with a strong win over Welsh Fire, showing signs of the potential Bobat will now look to build on.

His appointment signals an era of heightened ambition and professionalism across The Hundred, as franchises begin to define their identities in the wake of private investment.
