Hampshire Slump to Heavy Defeat as Allison’s Six-For Powers Worcestershire to Victory

New Road, Worcester – A sensational bowling display from Ben Allison, who claimed career-best figures of 6 for 35, led Worcestershire to a commanding five-wicket victory over a misfiring Hampshire in Group A of the Metro Bank One-Day Cup.

Hampshire, asked to bat first on a good surface, were bundled out for just 194, despite a resilient 60 from Nick Gubbins. In reply, Worcestershire chased down the target with ease, reaching 196 for 5 with more than ten overs to spare, maintaining their unbeaten run in the competition.

Allison struck early to remove Ali Orr and Tilak Varma within the first few overs, reducing Hampshire to 14 for 2. Gubbins then led a mini-recovery, guiding his side past the 50-run mark and playing fluently in excellent batting conditions.

Scotland international Brandon McMullen (29) made a promising start but threw away his wicket, while Gubbins remained steady, striking nine boundaries en route to his second half-century of the tournament. However, just as he looked set for a big score, Ethan Brookes trapped him LBW to swing the momentum back Worcestershire’s way.

Youngster Jack Home, making his first appearance of the season, provided a highlight moment for the home crowd, castling Ben Mayes with a fiery delivery that sent middle stump flying. At 121 for 5, Hampshire were in trouble.

A sixth-wicket partnership of 62 between Tom Prest (36) and Felix Organ (22) briefly steadied the innings, but Allison returned to clean up both in the same over – including a brilliant caught-and-bowled to dismiss Prest. He then removed two more batters in his final over, finishing with 6 for 35 and helping bowl Hampshire out inside 44 overs.

Worcestershire's chase had few hiccups. Despite losing Isaac Mohammed early, a solid 59-run stand between Kashif Ali (36) and captain Brett D’Oliveira (52) ensured a comfortable platform. Kashif, in search of a third straight fifty, fell short, but D'Oliveira guided the innings with a composed half-century from 79 balls.

McMullen briefly gave Hampshire hope by removing D’Oliveira in the 30th over, but Brookes countered with an entertaining 35 off 24 balls, pushing the Rapids past 160. Even with late wickets falling, Jake Libby’s 32 and the depth of the batting ensured Worcestershire cruised home with 10.3 overs to spare.

Score Summary:

Hampshire 194 all out (Gubbins 60, Allison 6-35)
Worcestershire 196 for 5 (D'Oliveira 52, Kashif 36, Brookes 35)

Worcestershire won by 5 wickets.
