Manchester Originals Dominate with the Ball to Crush Welsh Fire in Women’s Hundred
A clinical bowling display led by Lauren Filer and Mahika Gaur powered Manchester Originals to a commanding seven-wicket victory over Welsh Fire at Sophia Gardens, reigniting their hopes of progression in the Women’s Hundred.
Bowling first, the Originals put on a masterclass with the ball, reducing Fire to just 73 for 9 — a total easily chased down with 19 balls to spare.
Lauren Filer was the standout performer, finishing with sensational figures of 3 for 8. The fast bowler struck twice in successive deliveries, removing Sarah Bryce and Emily Windsor, before claiming the prized wicket of Jess Jonassen in the same set of five.
England left-armer Mahika Gaur continued her impressive form, opening the attack and swinging the ball prodigiously to remove national teammates Tammy Beaumont and Sophia Dunkley. Her new-ball spell left Fire reeling at 12 for 2 within the first 25 balls. Gaur returned with 2 for 10 in a fiery burst.
Sophie Ecclestone was her usual miserly self, conceding just 11 runs while claiming the key scalps of Hayley Matthews and Georgia Elwiss. Kathryn Bryce capped off the innings with two wickets in the final set, wrapping up an utterly dominant performance with 2 for 10.
Only Matthews offered brief resistance with 22, but Fire struggled throughout and never looked likely to post a competitive total.
In reply, Manchester Originals took a cautious approach following the early dismissals of Beth Mooney and Melie Kerr. But Kathryn Bryce anchored the chase with a composed 45 off 41 balls, supported by Seren Smale (20*), as the pair calmly guided the side home.
Though Bryce was stumped late in the innings by her sister Sarah, the outcome was never in doubt.
Speaking after being named Meerkat Match Hero, Gaur said: “It feels really good. It was a great effort by the bowlers. The conditions were good and it was swinging early so I'm really happy with that. The last game was so close; it just shows that when we play at our best, we can beat any team in this competition.”
The Originals now move to two wins from four matches, while Welsh Fire are left to regroup after a bruising defeat.
