Jamie Smith Stars as London Spirit Hand Rockets First Defeat of the Season
Jamie Smith's explosive half-century at the top of the order and a clinical performance from London Spirit’s pace unit secured a 21-run victory over Trent Rockets, ending the Rockets’ unbeaten run in the 2025 Men’s Hundred.
Smith, promoted to open, struck a fluent 52 off 34 balls, anchoring Spirit’s innings and sharing a 73-run stand with Kane Williamson (45). Ashton Turner added late impetus with a 30 off just 16 balls, lifting the Spirit to a competitive 162 for 5.
In reply, Rockets began confidently, with openers Tom Banton and Joe Root racing to 69 for the first wicket. Banton looked particularly threatening, smashing Dan Worrall for a massive 89-metre six. But the momentum shifted dramatically when Jamie Overton dismissed Banton in unusual fashion – dragging a dab onto his stumps for 46.
That wicket triggered a collapse. Worrall returned to remove David Willey and Rehan Ahmed in the space of three balls, the latter undone by a sharp away-cutter. Root then fell to Liam Dawson for 27, miscuing a sweep shot, as Rockets lost four wickets in just 14 balls.
Though Marcus Stoinis launched a late assault, it wasn’t enough. London Spirit’s pace quartet of Overton, Worrall, Luke Wood, and Richard Gleeson — who bowled the fastest delivery of the tournament so far at 94.1mph — maintained relentless pressure, sharing six wickets between them and closing out the game with precision.
The win brings Spirit level in a five-way tie at the top of the standings, while the Rockets’ hopes of a third straight successful chase were dashed under the lights at Lord’s.
Speaking after being named Meerkat Match Hero, Smith said:
"It's been difficult at times at home for us, so to come out here and get a win in front of a fantastic crowd is really important. Our seamers took the pace off nicely, used the dimensions well, and most importantly, we kept taking wickets."
He added: "It's good to start well with a new team, and I just want to keep building relationships with the guys at the top – Warner, Williamson – and keep contributing."
