Superchargers Go Top as Rashid Spins Web Around Phoenix
Adil Rashid starred with the ball as Northern Superchargers climbed to the top of the table in the Men’s Hundred, defeating Birmingham Phoenix by 36 runs in front of a packed Headingley crowd.
Powered by a commanding batting display from Dawid Malan and Zak Crawley, the Superchargers posted 193 for 5, the highest score in the tournament since the 2023 season. Malan struck a fluent 58 while Crawley blazed 45 off just 23 deliveries, combining for a 67-run opening stand in only 31 balls. Michael Pepper and captain Harry Brook added impetus through the middle, with Brook launching a six off his first ball and finishing with a quickfire 31 from 14 deliveries.
Chasing a daunting total, Phoenix mounted a mid-innings fightback through Jacob Bethell (48) and Liam Livingstone (46),* who stitched together a rapid 80-run partnership in just 42 balls. However, with 87 runs still required from 38 balls, Rashid removed Bethell with a sharp caught-and-bowled to halt their momentum.
Rashid, who finished with 2 for 26, then outfoxed the dangerous Livingstone to effectively seal the match. Matthew Potts also impressed with the ball, claiming 3 for 26, while Gus Atkinson and Dan Lawes contributed with two wickets each.
Phoenix, who lost three early wickets during the powerplay, continue to struggle with inconsistency at the top of the order and now face an uphill battle to qualify for the knockout stages.
Speaking after being named Meerkat Match Hero, Rashid credited the team’s all-round performance. “We put a great score on the board, which allowed us bowlers to attack. I know their batters will come hard at me, so I try to be unpredictable and mix it up. It helps that I’ve bowled to a lot of these boys in the nets — you learn their strengths and weaknesses,” he said.
With three wins from four, Andrew Flintoff’s side is now emerging as a strong title contender, boasting a balanced unit filled with experience and explosive talent across the board.
