Tom Clark's Sensational 139 Guides Sussex to Nail-Biting One-Wicket Win Over Lancashire

Tom Clark's Sensational 139 Guides Sussex to Nail-Biting One-Wicket Win Over Lancashire

Tom Clark delivered a masterclass with the bat, scoring a career-best 139, as Sussex edged past Lancashire in a dramatic one-wicket victory with just three balls to spare in the Metro Bank One-Day Cup at Hove.

Chasing a daunting 339, Sussex looked in cruise control after a record-breaking 232-run second-wicket stand between Clark and Tom Haines (90). However, a sudden collapse saw them lose six wickets for just 27 runs, turning what seemed a comfortable chase into a tense thriller.

Despite the middle-order wobble, Jack Carson and Henry Crocombe kept Sussex in the hunt with a nerveless stand late in the innings. Carson’s sixes off Charlie Barnard and Tom Bailey swung momentum back in Sussex’s favour. Yet the drama wasn’t done — with just one needed from four balls, Crocombe was trapped lbw by Barnard. It was left to No. 11 Sean Hunt to deliver the final blow, lofting Barnard back over his head to seal the win and keep Sussex’s hopes alive in Group B.

Earlier, Lancashire posted an imposing 338 for 7 on a batting-friendly pitch under clear skies. Openers Michael Jones (82) and George Bell (66) laid the platform with a commanding 157-run partnership — a new first-wicket record for Lancashire against Sussex in List A cricket. They were well supported by 21-year-old Harry Singh, who smashed a career-best 74 off 61 balls, including five sixes, to take Lancashire past the 300 mark.

Sussex’s bowlers struggled in the sweltering heat, but legspinner Archie Lenham (1-47) and offspinner Jack Carson (2-43) kept things in check during the middle overs. Henry Crocombe returned the best figures among the seamers with 3 for 61, including two wickets in two balls during the death overs.

The Sussex reply began shakily with Charlie Tear dismissed early, but Clark and Haines took control, showing flair and maturity in equal measure. Clark, in particular, was outstanding, finding gaps effortlessly and clearing the ropes five times in his 109-ball innings. His knock, the highest of his List A career, was the cornerstone of Sussex’s chase.

Lancashire, however, clawed back through offspinner Arav Shetty (3-51) and Charlie Barnard (4-56), as tired shots from Sussex’s middle and lower order brought them back into the contest.

But despite the late flurry of wickets, Sussex held their nerve in a thrilling finish to claim their second win in four matches and boost their chances of progressing in the tournament.
