Bancroft’s Brilliant 143 Keeps Gloucestershire Unbeaten in One-Day Cup*
Cameron Bancroft delivered a commanding unbeaten century to steer Gloucestershire to a five-wicket win over Glamorgan, securing their fourth consecutive victory in the Metro Bank One-Day Cup and preserving their perfect record in Group A.
Chasing 290 at the Seat Unique Stadium in Bristol, the Australian opener anchored the innings with a sublime 143* off 144 balls — his sixth List A century — guiding Gloucestershire to victory with 20 balls to spare. His innings featured 17 fours and two sixes and was built around two key partnerships: 72 runs with Ben Charlesworth and 84 with Graeme van Buuren.
The win keeps Gloucestershire top of the Group A table, while 2024 champions Glamorgan remain winless and now face an uphill task to stay in contention for the knockout rounds.
Glamorgan Post Competitive Total
After being sent in to bat, Glamorgan posted a competitive 288 for 9, built on a solid second-wicket stand of 127 between Eddie Byrom (94 off 108) and Sam Northeast (52 off 59). Byrom, fluent throughout, narrowly missed out on a century before falling to a brilliant boundary catch by Tommy Boorman.
Gloucestershire's bowling unit fought back well in the latter stages. Graeme van Buuren was instrumental, claiming 3 for 33 with his left-arm spin, including the crucial wickets of Northeast, Kiran Carlson, and Byrom. Seamers Matt Taylor (3 for 59) and Josh Shaw (3 for 60) helped stem the flow of runs at the death, dismissing key middle and lower-order batters including a dangerous Dan Douthwaite, who smashed 43 with four sixes.
Bancroft Holds Firm Amid Wickets
The chase began briskly, with James Bracey striking a quickfire 34 from 25 balls in a 43-run opening stand. However, Glamorgan hit back quickly, as Ned Leonard removed Bracey and Ollie Price in the same over to leave Gloucestershire reeling at 43 for 2.
Bancroft then took charge, first rebuilding with Charlesworth (37), and later combining with Jack Taylor to take the score to 145 at the halfway mark. Even after Taylor and van Buuren (36) departed, Bancroft remained composed, reaching his century from 100 balls and accelerating efficiently as the target came into view.
Tommy Boorman added an unbeaten 27 in a calm 57-run partnership with Bancroft to finish the chase, as Glamorgan’s bowlers struggled to break through in the final overs.
Injury Setback for Glamorgan
Adding to Glamorgan’s woes, wicketkeeper Alex Horton suffered a hand injury during the innings and was replaced by Will Smale behind the stumps. The disruption did little to help Glamorgan’s defence of the total, as Gloucestershire’s batting depth came through once again.
What’s Next
With four wins from four, Gloucestershire sit firmly atop Group A and look strong contenders for a knockout berth. Glamorgan, still searching for their first win, must now win all remaining games to keep their tournament hopes alive.
