D'Oliveira’s Career-Best 138 Powers Worcestershire to Thrilling Win Over Derbyshire

Brett D’Oliveira produced a captain’s knock of the highest order, scoring a career-best 138 to guide Worcestershire Rapids to a stunning four-wicket win over Derbyshire Falcons in a high-scoring Metro Bank One-Day Cup clash at Repton School.

Chasing a daunting target of 316, D’Oliveira’s classy innings, backed by Jake Libby’s 69 and a composed unbeaten 42 from debutant Dan Lategan, helped the Rapids recover from a shaky start and seal victory with 11 balls to spare.

Earlier, Caleb Jewell had struck a fluent 113 and Matt Montgomery contributed 92 as Derbyshire looked set for a huge total. However, a late collapse saw them lose their last five wickets for just 25 runs, finishing on 315 all out — a total that ultimately proved just short.

Jewell, Montgomery Shine Before Late Collapse

On a historic day that saw first-team cricket return to Repton School for the first time since 1988, Derbyshire made a promising start after being asked to bat. Jewell and Harry Came put on 46 before Came fell to Kurram Shahzad. That brought Montgomery to the crease, and the pair seized control, adding 150 runs for the second wicket.

Jewell reached his century from 96 balls, striking four sixes along the way, while Montgomery played with elegance to notch his first 50 for Derbyshire. But their dismissals in quick succession sparked a collapse. Fateh Singh and Ben Allison exploited the middle and lower order vulnerabilities, and Derbyshire crumbled from 290 for 5 to 315 all out.

Rapids Recover from Early Wobble

Worcestershire’s chase began in disastrous fashion, with Isaac Mohammed falling for a duck and Kashif Ali following soon after. At 11 for 2, Derbyshire had the upper hand.

But D’Oliveira and Libby steadied the innings with a dominant 183-run partnership in just 28 overs. D’Oliveira was in sublime form, bringing up his century off 84 balls and striking three sixes and multiple boundaries as he controlled the innings.

Libby played a crucial supporting role with a well-paced 69, but his dismissal by Rory Haydon gave Derbyshire hope. Haydon struck again to remove Ethan Brookes cheaply, but the momentum remained with Worcestershire.

Lategan Seals the Deal on Debut

With 67 runs needed from the final 10 overs, debutant Dan Lategan showed maturity beyond his years. The 19-year-old struck two sixes — including a powerful pull off Haydon and a lofted drive off Morley — and formed a match-winning partnership with D’Oliveira.

Even after D’Oliveira was bowled by Morley for 138, Lategan held his nerve, guiding the side home with help from a handy cameo by Henry Cullen.

What’s Next

The win bolsters Worcestershire’s hopes of advancing from Group A, while Derbyshire will rue their batting collapse after such a promising platform.
