James Sales' Maiden Ton and Chahal's Three-For Power Northamptonshire to Crushing Win Over Durham
Northamptonshire finally got their Metro Bank One-Day Cup campaign up and running with a dominant 150-run victory over Durham, thanks to a superb maiden List A century by James Sales and a clinical bowling display led by India’s Yuzvendra Chahal.
Sales, 22, produced a composed and powerful 117 off 110 balls, lifting the Steelbacks to an imposing 321 for 8 after they were put into bat. His innings featured three sixes and was built on solid partnerships with overseas player Tim Robinson (63) and Justin Broad (59), both of whom played key supporting roles in a commanding batting performance.
Northamptonshire's total proved far beyond Durham’s reach as they crumbled to 171 all out in just 31.5 overs. Chahal, continuing his fine form in the tournament, claimed 3 for 30 from six overs, while Liam Guthrie and Luke Procter chipped in with two wickets each.
Durham’s chase faltered early, collapsing to 49 for 4 within 11 overs. The tone was set in the second over when former Northamptonshire opener Emilio Gay was trapped lbw by Guthrie for a golden duck – his second in as many matches. With key batter David Bedingham falling for 30 and no significant contributions from the rest of the top order, Durham never recovered.
The home side, who were missing wicketkeeper-batter Ollie Robinson due to a family bereavement, struggled to find momentum. A brief lower-order resistance came from debutant Robbie Bowman (27) and George Drissell (30), but their efforts were ultimately in vain.
Chahal dismissed Coughlin and Killeen in a productive 31st over, before 17-year-old off-spinner Nirvan Ramesh sealed the win by claiming his maiden first-team wicket, Archie Bailey, caught behind.
Earlier in the match, Durham had made promising inroads with the ball, reducing Northamptonshire to 35 for 2. But Sales steadied the innings with successive century partnerships, first with Robinson for the third wicket and then with Broad for the fourth.
His innings, which took him past his previous List A best of 35, was a mix of grit and fluency. Sales brought up his fifty in 65 balls and reached his hundred in 101, before eventually falling in the 48th over.
With this win, Northamptonshire broke their winless streak in the tournament, having suffered two losses and a washout in their previous three games. Durham, on the other hand, now face an uphill battle to stay in contention for a top-three spot, having lost three out of five.
