CSK Clarify Dewald Brevis Signing After R Ashwin’s Remarks
The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have issued an official clarification regarding the signing of South African batter Dewald Brevis during the 2025 IPL season, stating that the move was made “in complete compliance” with tournament regulations.
The statement was prompted by recent comments made by senior India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin on his YouTube channel, where he suggested that Brevis may have been signed for more than his eligible amount, potentially breaching IPL rules.
Ashwin Raises Eyebrows Over Brevis Deal
Speaking on his channel, Ashwin claimed Brevis was approached by multiple franchises before joining CSK mid-season, and implied that negotiations with the player’s agent may have involved demands for a higher fee.
“I even heard that two-three teams were also talking to him but had to let him go after not being able to pay extra money,” Ashwin said.
“His concept would have been, ‘If I play this season, my value will go higher’. So he might have told CSK, ‘I’ll need the extra money’. And the team was willing to pay him extra, which is why he came in.”
Ashwin’s remarks sparked questions over whether CSK had potentially breached IPL rules by signing Brevis for more than the allowed amount.
CSK's Response: Signing Was Within the Rules
In response, CSK clarified that Brevis was signed in April 2025 for INR 2.2 crore, the exact amount for which pacer Gurjapneet Singh was originally bought at the auction in Jeddah before being ruled out with injury.
Brevis had gone unsold at the auction earlier in the year and was brought in as a mid-season injury replacement for Gurjapneet.
The franchise emphasized that the signing was conducted in accordance with clause 6.6 of the IPL Player Regulations 2025–27, which governs injury replacements. CSK also pointed to an IPL media advisory issued on April 18 that publicly confirmed the signing and the fee involved.
IPL Rules on Replacements
Under IPL rules, a replacement player cannot be signed for more than the fee of the player being replaced. The league also allows for a pro-rated reduction in the player’s actual fee, depending on how many matches had occurred prior to the signing.
“If a Replacement Player is recruited during a Season, the League Fee actually paid to him will be reduced to take account of the Franchisee’s matches during the relevant Season which took place before he was registered,” the IPL regulations state.
Brevis Impresses in Back-End of IPL 2025
Brevis had a notable impact after joining CSK in the second half of IPL 2025, showcasing his power-hitting and raising his profile ahead of the next IPL auction. His performances reportedly drew interest from multiple franchises, further fuelling speculation about the nature of his signing.
However, with the franchise and IPL media confirming the adherence to rules, the issue now appears settled—at least officially.
