Kapp, Capsey Star in Oval Invincibles’ Commanding Win Over Welsh Fire

All-round brilliance from Marizanne Kapp and Alice Capsey powered Oval Invincibles to a dominant 39-run victory over Welsh Fire in the Women’s Hundred on Saturday. The pair combined for a crucial batting partnership before sharing four wickets to seal the game at The Kia Oval.

The home side posted a competitive 150 for 5, anchored by Capsey’s 55 and Kapp’s unbeaten 47, before bowling out Welsh Fire for 111 despite a fighting half-century from Sophia Dunkley.

A Bumpy Start, Then a Counterattack

It wasn’t an ideal birthday for Invincibles captain Lauren Winfield-Hill, who was bowled off the very first ball by Shabnim Ismail. But Capsey countered aggressively, hitting Ismail for three consecutive boundaries to steady the innings.

She found a reliable partner in Meg Lanning, and together they took Invincibles to 41 for 1 by the end of the powerplay. Lanning looked in fine touch before falling to Katie Levick, though replays indicated a possible missed review opportunity, with the ball brushing her glove before striking the pad.

Capsey, undeterred, continued to attack and brought up her half-century from just 32 balls, including a massive six and several clean boundaries. She was eventually dismissed for 55, caught and bowled by Ismail, but Kapp ensured the momentum didn’t drop.

The South African allrounder anchored the back half of the innings with a composed 47 not out, supported briefly by Amanda-Jade Wellington and Paige Scholfield, helping Invincibles reach a total that proved more than sufficient.

Dunkley Fights, But Fire Falter

Welsh Fire’s chase began with promise as Dunkley and Hayley Matthews found early boundaries. Dunkley especially looked in commanding form, taking Rachel Slater for four consecutive boundaries and later bringing up the first half-century for Welsh Fire in this year's competition off 36 balls.

But wickets at crucial intervals derailed the chase.

Wellington removed Matthews for 12, while Kapp struck a major blow with a double-wicket burst — trapping Tammy Beaumont lbw and clean bowling Georgia Elwiss in consecutive deliveries.

Capsey then chipped in with two wickets of her own, including Jess Jonassen, as Welsh Fire slumped to 67 for 4, still needing 84 runs from 48 balls.

Dunkley continued to battle valiantly, but with little support and mounting pressure, she eventually fell for 56 off 41 balls, effectively ending Fire’s resistance.

The visitors were bowled out with 11 balls to spare, handing Invincibles a much-needed and morale-boosting win.

Post-Match Reaction

Named Meerkat Match Hero, Kapp praised her side’s improved form:
"We didn’t start off this tournament like we wanted to, but it feels like we’ve got a bit of momentum now. Capsey’s innings was brilliant — she gave me the chance to settle and play my game. It was a different pitch than what we’re used to here, but adapting well is a good sign."
