Charlie Tear’s Record-Breaking Century Powers Sussex to Commanding Victory Over Northamptonshire

Charlie Tear produced a breathtaking maiden List A century to lead Sussex Sharks to a convincing seven-wicket win over Northamptonshire in the Metro Bank One Day Cup at Wantage Road. Tear’s magnificent 159 off 146 balls — featuring 23 fours and two sixes — not only guided Sussex to their second win in three days but also set a new record for the highest individual List A score for Sussex against Northamptonshire.

The Scottish international dominated from the outset, sharing a devastating 216-run opening partnership with Tom Haines (76 from 81 balls) — Sussex’s highest-ever List A stand for any wicket against the Steelbacks. The pair tore into a lacklustre Northamptonshire bowling attack, which suffered from inconsistency and fielding errors throughout the afternoon.

Tear reached his hundred from exactly 100 balls and continued his onslaught to pass 150 with a towering six over midwicket, eventually falling with victory in sight. His innings laid the foundation for a successful chase of 296, which Sussex completed with 19 balls to spare.

Northamptonshire Fall Short Despite Sales’ Resistance

Earlier, Northamptonshire posted 295 for 8, a total that looked competitive but ultimately proved below par on a flat pitch. James Sales narrowly missed out on back-to-back centuries, top-scoring with 98 off 96 balls. He shared a 115-run partnership with debutant Stuart van der Merwe (59), who impressed with an inventive, confident knock despite an early reprieve when dropped at slip first ball.

The hosts started cautiously, with openers Luke Procter (36) and Aadi Sharma (38) putting on 73 for the first wicket. But Sussex’s spinners applied the brakes in the middle overs. Jack Carson, in particular, delivered a miserly six-over spell, conceding just 13 runs and taking a wicket. His 16 dot balls in 17 deliveries strangled the innings' momentum.

Leg-spinner Archie Lenham and left-arm spinner Bertie Foreman both chipped in, with Lenham also holding a key catch and Foreman nearly dismissing van der Merwe first ball.

Despite some late hitting from George Bartlett (28 off 18), Northamptonshire lost four wickets in 19 balls during the closing stages, including Sales — caught at cover just two runs shy of a century. Danny Lamb and Fynn Hudson-Prentice each claimed a wicket during the late collapse.

Sussex Dominate in Reply

In response, Sussex's openers came out firing, amassing 80 runs in the powerplay alone. Tear played with authority from the start, mixing elegant strokeplay with powerful hitting. Haines provided steady support before falling for 76 in the 34th over, hooking Ben Whitehouse to the boundary fielder.

Tear pressed on, eventually falling for 159 — caught at backward point off Dom Leech — but the damage had been done. Tom Clark added 34 before being bowled by Bartlett with just five runs needed. John Simpson sealed the win in style, clearing the ropes to complete a commanding chase.
