Gubbins, Fuller Star as Hampshire Thrash Surrey by Nine Wickets in One-Day Cup Rout
Hampshire stormed to a dominant nine-wicket victory over Surrey in their Metro Bank One-Day Cup Group A clash, with skipper Nick Gubbins leading a blistering chase after a clinical bowling performance spearheaded by James Fuller and young spinner Andrew Neal.
After bundling Surrey out for a modest 160 in 46.3 overs, Hampshire raced to their target in just 19.1 overs, with Gubbins smashing an unbeaten 87 off 60 balls to seal the emphatic win with 30.5 overs to spare.
Veteran seamer Fuller claimed 4 for 34, while 25-year-old Neal and 16-year-old quick Manny Lumsden added to Surrey's woes with sharp, attacking spells. Neal returned 3 for 33 from 10 overs, removing key middle-order batters including Ben Foakes, while Lumsden took 2 for 46, removing former England opener Rory Burns early in the innings.
Surrey never truly recovered after slumping to 89 for 6. Josh Blake and Nikhil Gorantla were joint top-scorers with 22 apiece, but the rest of the lineup faltered under sustained pressure. Only some lower-order resistance from Blake, James Taylor, and Barnwell helped them reach 160 in front of a 5,000-strong Oval crowd.
Gubbins wasted no time in reply, hammering three sixes and 13 fours in a sparkling innings. He added 54 with fellow opener Ali Orr before teaming up with Fletcha Middleton for an unbroken 108-run stand in just 9.3 overs. Middleton smashed an unbeaten 35 off just 24 balls, including two sixes and four boundaries.
Surrey's bowlers endured a bruising afternoon, with Nathan Barnwell leaking 50 runs in just three overs and Yousuf Majid going for 31 in his three.
The result strengthens Hampshire’s position in Group A, giving them a fourth win in five matches and boosting their hopes of progressing to the knockout stages of the One-Day Cup.
