Leicestershire Sign Josh Davey and Jonny Tattersall on Three-Year Deals
Leicestershire County Cricket Club have announced the double signing of Scotland international seamer Josh Davey and Yorkshire wicketkeeper-batter Jonny Tattersall, with both players agreeing to three-year contracts starting from November 1, 2025.
The acquisitions mark a significant step forward for Leicestershire as they continue to build a competitive squad aiming for a return to Division One of the County Championship for the first time since 2003. Both players will join following the expiration of their current deals with Somerset and Yorkshire, respectively.
Experienced Duo Bolster Foxes’ Ambitions
Josh Davey, 35, brings a wealth of experience to Grace Road, having played 62 internationals for Scotland and appearing in two T20 World Cups. A consistent performer across formats, Davey boasts 214 first-class wickets at an average of 24.25, and has also made valuable contributions in List A and T20 formats. He previously had a loan spell with Leicestershire in 2023 and was impressed with the team’s environment and ambition.
“I spoke to Fons [Alfonso Thomas] and Claude [Henderson], and it was clear they've got a collective vision for elevating the club to the next level,” Davey said. “There's a lot of talent in the squad, and I hope to supplement that with the experience I've gained across all three formats over the last 15 years.”
Davey’s Somerset teammate, Ben Green, is also expected to join Leicestershire permanently after successful loan spells in recent seasons, although that move is yet to be formally announced.
Tattersall to Fill Swindells’ Void Behind the Stumps
Tattersall, 30, will fill the wicketkeeping vacancy left by Harry Swindells, who was forced into early retirement due to injury last month. A loyal servant to Yorkshire since his debut in 2013, Tattersall made 155 appearances for the club, with last season being particularly memorable as he captained Yorkshire to promotion back to Division One. He averaged 40.18 in the 2024 season, recording two centuries and affecting 29 dismissals behind the stumps.
“Leicestershire is a club that has some great history behind it and has built a team that seems to be going places,” Tattersall said. “I can see a real purpose and a focus within the group… Hopefully, I can bring experience of first division cricket and help guide a few younger lads.”
One of Tattersall’s two centuries last season came against his future club, when his performance led Yorkshire to an innings victory over Leicestershire in September, helping secure promotion.
Management Backs New Additions
Leicestershire director of cricket Claude Henderson praised both signings for their professionalism, experience, and potential to influence the dressing room positively.
“Josh is a high-calibre operator… His voice and all-round abilities will be a great addition to our changing room,” Henderson said. “Jonny’s character, leadership skills, and all-round cricket abilities are hugely impressive. He will bring vast experience and further depth to our batting department.”
With the club already leading the Division Two table and pushing hard for promotion, the additions of Davey and Tattersall — along with the expected signing of Ben Green — signal Leicestershire’s clear intent to not just return to the top flight, but to compete for silverware in all formats.
