Dawkins’ Maiden Century Powers Kent to Emphatic Win Over Northamptonshire
Ben Dawkins struck a sublime maiden List A century as Kent Spitfires cruised to a comfortable seven-wicket win over Northamptonshire in the Metro Bank One-Day Cup, chasing down 244 with more than five overs to spare.
Dawkins, an in-form England Under-19 opener, was the star of the show with an unbeaten 111 off 105 balls – a composed innings laced with 12 fours and two sixes. He shared a commanding 157-run second-wicket partnership with Joey Evison, who continued his strong all-round form with 82 off 106 balls, including 10 fours and a six.
Earlier, a youthful Northamptonshire side posted 243 all out, with Aadi Sharma top-scoring with a fluent 82 off 90 balls – his maiden List A fifty – and a lively contribution from Stuart van der Merwe (37). But Evison did damage with the ball too, claiming career-best figures of 3 for 36 in a superb opening spell that rattled the home side’s top order.
Northamptonshire’s Fightback Falls Short
After being asked to bat, Northamptonshire made a shaky start. Evison removed captain Luke Procter (15), James Sales (lbw for 5), and George Bartlett (14) to leave the Steelbacks in early trouble.
Sharma, however, looked composed and aggressive, striking eight boundaries and a six in his innings. He combined with van der Merwe for a brisk 75-run partnership, marked by sharp running and clever strokeplay. Van der Merwe reverse-swept and lofted the spinners with intent, including a six off Matt Parkinson.
But Parkinson turned the tide, dismissing Lewis McManus, Sharma, and Rob Keogh in quick succession as Northamptonshire collapsed from 146 for 3 to 171 for 7.
Late resistance came from Dom Leech (36 off 35) and debutant Aryaman Varma (30), who added 59 for the eighth wicket. Leech attacked with powerful sweeps and straight drives, while Varma impressed with his technique and shot selection. But Jaydn Denly and Fred Klaassen cleaned up the tail, leaving Kent a target of 244.
Kent's Chase Led by Rising Stars
Kent’s reply began briskly, with Dawkins and Denly adding 58 for the first wicket inside seven overs. Denly struck a huge six but fell for 20 to a brilliant one-handed catch by van der Merwe.
Unfazed, Dawkins and Evison settled into a rhythm, rotating strike efficiently and punishing loose deliveries. Dawkins reached his fifty with a boundary off Varma, while Evison brought up his half-century with a crisp cover drive off Leech.
As Kent coasted towards the target, Dawkins reached his century in style, pulling van der Merwe for a towering six over midwicket. Evison perished soon after, holing out to long-on, and Chris Benjamin followed similarly. But Dawkins stayed unbeaten to take his side home in 44.4 overs.
