Lammonby’s Five-For Seals Stunning Somerset Win Over Sussex at Hove

A remarkable spell of bowling from Tom Lammonby inspired Somerset to a dramatic 90-run win over Sussex in the Metro Bank One-Day Cup, overturning the odds after being bowled out for just 243.

Lammonby, who scored a duck earlier in the day, returned with the ball to take a career-best 5 for 20, including a stunning three-wicket maiden, as Sussex crumbled from a position of strength to be all out for 153.

It was Somerset’s fourth win in six matches, keeping their hopes alive in the group stage, while Sussex slumped to yet another self-inflicted collapse after a promising start.

Sussex Collapse After Bright Start

Chasing 244, Sussex were firmly in control at 60 for 1 after 10 overs, having doubled Somerset’s powerplay score. But their innings unraveled spectacularly, losing four wickets for no runs in just eight balls.

Lammonby triggered the collapse by removing Charlie Tear, Fynn Hudson-Prentice (lbw), and captain John Simpson (lbw) in one over. In the next over, Tom Clark, the only batter showing fluency, chipped to mid-on as Sussex slid to 60 for 5.

Though Jack Carson counterattacked with a brisk 35, his dismissal at 128 spelled the end of Sussex’s resistance. Lammonby returned to complete his maiden five-wicket haul in any format, as Somerset sealed an unlikely and emphatic win.

Thomas and Hill Rescue Somerset

Somerset’s innings had begun disastrously at 33 for 3 in the powerplay and worsened to 82 for 5 after both James (29) and Thomas Rew (30) fell to Henry Crocombe, who finished with 3 for 47.

But a gritty recovery was led by Josh Thomas (50 off 55 balls) and Finley Hill (55). Their sixth-wicket partnership of 59, followed by a 67-run stand between Hill and Kian Roberts, lifted Somerset to a competitive 243 all out.

Thomas reached his fifty with a pulled six off Sean Hunt, who returned 3 for 35, before falling in the same over. Hill anchored the later part of the innings, while Roberts and James Bashir added valuable lower-order runs.

Somerset – 243 all out in 46.4 overs
(Hill 55, Thomas 50; Hunt 3-35, Crocombe 3-47)
