Steven Smith Anchors Fire’s Victory, Dealing Major Blow to Phoenix Play-Off Hopes

Steven Smith returned to form in timely fashion to steer Welsh Fire to a convincing eight-wicket win over Birmingham Phoenix in The Hundred Men’s Competition, keeping his side's slim play-off hopes alive while denting Phoenix's qualification chances.

Set a modest target of 139, Fire chased it down with 11 balls to spare, thanks to a composed unbeaten 47 from Smith and a blistering 29-ball 42 from Steve Eskinazi. Smith, who had struggled in his maiden Hundred season, looked in control as he guided the innings, supported by fireworks from Eskinazi and Jonny Bairstow, who struck 35 from 21 deliveries.

Bairstow lit up Edgbaston by launching Adam Milne for a massive six into the Hollies Stand, though he was bowled by the very next ball. The momentum, however, stayed with the visitors, with captain Tom Abell applying the finishing touches.

Earlier, Phoenix posted a below-par 138 for 9 after a series of promising starts failed to develop into substantial scores. Will Smeed (23), Joe Clarke (24), and Liam Livingstone (16) all entertained briefly, while Jacob Bethell’s stylish 38 off 28 balls, including three sixes, offered the lone highlight of the innings.

Welsh Fire’s spinners applied the brakes effectively, with Chris Green claiming 3 for 27, including the key wicket of Bethell in the final set. On debut, 19-year-old Ben Kellaway impressed with figures of 2 for 10 from 15 balls, along with three catches and a run-out to complete a dream start in the tournament.

Australian quick Riley Meredith also chipped in with the early dismissal of Ben Duckett, bowling him for 5.

The result lifts Welsh Fire off the bottom of the table into seventh place, still eight points adrift of third but with two matches remaining. Phoenix remain fifth, narrowly ahead of Fire on net run rate, but with their play-off hopes hanging by a thread.

Score Summary:
Welsh Fire 140/2 (Smith 47*, Eskinazi 42, Bairstow 35)
Birmingham Phoenix 138/9 (Bethell 38, Green 3-27, Kellaway 2-10)
