Williamson, Dawson Star as Spirit Dominate Brave to Keep Knockout Hopes Alive
London Spirit kept their hopes of a playoff spot in The Hundred alive with a commanding 47-run victory over Southern Brave under the lights at Lord’s. The win lifts both teams to 12 points, keeping them in contention for the final knockout berth, though still reliant on other results.
Spirit posted a strong 186 for 4, thanks to a blistering Powerplay knock from Jamie Smith and a composed half-century from Kane Williamson. Their bowlers then delivered a clinical performance, bowling out the Brave for just 139, with Liam Dawson and Richard Gleeson picking up three wickets apiece.
Jamie Smith set the tone early, hammering 44 from just 18 balls in a 66-run opening stand with David Warner. Although both fell to Michael Bracewell, their efforts laid a strong platform. Williamson, who had been quiet this season, came to life with a fluent 53, including three sixes — two of which came off England pacer Jofra Archer.
The Brave’s bowlers struggled to contain the Spirit batting lineup, though 20-year-old left-arm spinner James Coles impressed with figures of 1 for 22 from his 15 balls, removing the dangerous Ashton Turner.
In response, the Brave needed big contributions from veterans Jason Roy and James Vince. But both fell cheaply — Vince miscuing Luke Wood to mid-on and Roy playing around a straight one from Dawson after a brief 37-run cameo that featured a massive 102-metre six.
Laurie Evans briefly reignited Brave's hopes, launching four sixes in five balls to reduce the equation to 90 needed from 43. However, as wickets tumbled at the other end, Evans’ lone resistance wasn’t enough. He eventually fell for 37, caught on the boundary off Gleeson, who finished with 3 for 30.
Dawson closed out the innings in style, finishing with 3 for 23, while Jamie Overton bowled his brother Craig to seal the match and improve Spirit’s Net Run Rate — a potentially decisive factor in the final standings.
With this result, Oval Invincibles and Northern Superchargers have sealed their places in the knockout stages. The final qualification spot is now in Trent Rockets’ hands — a win against Welsh Fire on Sunday in Cardiff would secure their passage.
Meanwhile, both Spirit and Brave must now hope the Rockets falter in their final two matches while also winning their own last fixtures. The Brave face Welsh Fire on Thursday, while Spirit take on the Oval Invincibles in a high-stakes London derby on Monday at the Kia Oval.
