Sourav Ganguly Appointed Head Coach of Pretoria Capitals for SA20 Season 4

Former India captain Sourav Ganguly has been named the head coach of Pretoria Capitals for the upcoming fourth season of the SA20 league, set to begin on December 26. This marks Ganguly’s first-ever assignment as head coach of a T20 franchise.

Ganguly, who has been serving as the director of cricket for JSW Sports — the parent company of Pretoria Capitals — since last year, replaces Jonathan Trott in the coaching role. His appointment is seen as a strategic move by the franchise, which is looking to bounce back from two underwhelming seasons.

Pretoria Capitals started their SA20 journey with a strong performance in the inaugural season, topping the league stage before falling to Sunrisers Eastern Cape in the final. However, their form has dipped since then, with the team finishing fifth in both the 2023-24 and 2024-25 editions, missing out on playoff qualification.

Ganguly’s elevation to head coach adds a new chapter to his post-playing career. After retiring from international cricket, he served as the president of the Cricket Association of Bengal from 2015 to 2019. He then briefly joined Delhi Capitals as a mentor in the 2019 IPL season, before taking over as president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). His return to franchise cricket in a leadership role began last year when he joined JSW Sports, which co-owns both Delhi Capitals (IPL and WPL) and Pretoria Capitals.

With his new role, Ganguly’s immediate focus will be the SA20 player auction scheduled for September 9. The Capitals are expected to make significant changes to their squad to align with the vision of their new head coach.

The franchise will be hoping that Ganguly’s leadership and deep cricketing insight can help reverse their fortunes and guide them back into title contention.
