Trent Rockets Keep Top-Three Hopes Alive with Commanding Win Over Welsh Fire
Trent Rockets delivered a polished all-round display to claim a 23-run victory over Welsh Fire in The Hundred Women’s competition, keeping their hopes of reaching the Eliminator alive heading into the final round of group matches.
Batting first, the Rockets posted a competitive 145 for 6, led by dynamic contributions from Bryony Smith (38 off 27), Nat Sciver-Brunt (38 off 26), and Ashleigh Gardner (36 off 26). In reply, Welsh Fire stuttered to 122 for 9, undone by sharp bowling from Gardner (2 for 28) and leg-spinner Alana King (3 for 17), who turned the game in Rockets’ favour.
With the win, Rockets move to four points behind third-placed Manchester Originals. While qualification is still out of their hands, a win in their final group match against Birmingham Phoenix on Wednesday, combined with favourable results elsewhere, could see them clinch a spot in the top three.
Smith, Sciver-Brunt, and Gardner Lead Rockets’ Charge
Rockets opener Bryony Smith set the tone early, attacking Welsh Fire’s powerplay bowlers with a flurry of boundaries. She struck Freya Davies for three fours in the second set and dispatched Jess Jonassen for three consecutive boundaries in the fifth. Her enterprising knock came to an end on 38 when a top edge off Davies found Georgia Elwiss at short third.
The momentum continued with a solid third-wicket stand between England captain Nat Sciver-Brunt and Australia’s Ash Gardner, who added 67 runs from 45 balls. Sciver-Brunt played fluently, stroking five boundaries, while Gardner showcased her power game with three sixes.
Although both batters fell in quick succession—Sciver-Brunt trapped lbw by Jonassen and Gardner nicking a surprise bouncer from Hayley Matthews—Heather Graham chipped in with a handy unbeaten 13 to take the Rockets to 145.
Davies was the pick of the Fire bowlers with figures of 3 for 26.
King and Gardner Orchestrate Fire’s Collapse
Welsh Fire’s chase began brightly despite the early dismissal of Tammy Beaumont, bowled by Alexa Stonehouse for 5. Sophia Dunkley (26 off 23) and Hayley Matthews (18 off 12) pushed the score to 57 for 1, raising hopes of a successful pursuit.
However, Gardner’s clever off-spin dismissed Matthews with a well-flighted delivery that bowled the West Indian, triggering a slide in the Fire innings. The breakthrough allowed Alana King to apply pressure with her leg-spin, claiming 3 for 17 including the key scalps of Georgia Elwiss and Jess Jonassen.
Gardner returned to remove Dunkley with a sharp caught-and-bowled chance, and Fire's chase never recovered. They stumbled to 122 for 9 from their 100 balls, slumping to their sixth loss of the campaign.
Gardner Named Meerkat Match Hero
Reflecting on the team’s performance, Player of the Match Ash Gardner said:
"I think that was probably our first well-rounded performance. We did all three disciplines really well. Obviously we need to keep winning and for other results to go our way, but we're just trying to control what we can—and that's winning games of cricket."
Speaking about her own contribution, she added:
"There were a few dot balls where I tried to hit it too hard, but the wicket was quite tricky at times. When the ball was in my zone, I just tried to clear the fence."
With one group match remaining, the Rockets still have a chance—albeit an outside one—of reaching the knockout stages. A win on Wednesday against Birmingham Phoenix is now crucial, alongside favourable results from other fixtures.
