Westley and Critchley Star as Essex Crush Gloucestershire to Keep Knockout Hopes Alive
Essex extended their winning streak to four matches in the Metro Bank One Day Cup with a commanding 130-run victory over previously unbeaten Gloucestershire at Chelmsford, keeping their hopes of a knockout berth firmly alive.
Captain Tom Westley led from the front with a superb 92, continuing his prolific form with the bat this summer. His composed innings, spanning 103 deliveries and featuring eight boundaries, powered Essex to a competitive 289 before a late-innings collapse saw them lose eight wickets for just 107 runs.
In reply, Gloucestershire—already through to the knockout stages—produced their most lacklustre performance of the competition so far, bundled out for just 159 in 35.1 overs. All-rounder Matt Critchley played a key role in the rout, contributing 64 with the bat before claiming 3 for 27 with the ball.
Westley’s innings took his tournament tally to 443 runs in seven innings, which includes a century and three fifties. Combined with three red-ball centuries in June and July, the Essex skipper has now amassed a staggering 905 runs in just two months.
Despite a promising position at 182 for 2—thanks to century stands with Critchley (64 off 66) and Charlie Allison (40 off 43)—Essex lost momentum after Allison’s dismissal. Gloucestershire’s spinners exploited the worn surface, with captain Jack Taylor returning career-best List A figures of 5 for 61. The middle and lower order crumbled under sustained pressure, with the final wicket falling in the 49th over.
In response, Gloucestershire never recovered from the early loss of Cameron Bancroft, who was caught behind off Jamie Porter. James Bracey briefly threatened with 37 off 34, including a pulled six off Shane Snater, but his dismissal—sweeping across the line to Simon Harmer—opened the floodgates.
Ben Charlesworth, Jack Taylor, and Graeme van Buuren fell in quick succession as Essex’s spinners took control. Critchley struck in successive overs, removing Miles Hammond (30), Tommy Boorman, and Zaman Akhtar to complete a dominant all-round display.
Earlier in the day, Critchley and Westley had steadied the Essex innings after the early loss of Robin Das. Their second-wicket partnership of 103 set the tone before Critchley was trapped LBW by Ollie Price immediately after bringing up the century stand.
Charlie Allison added 75 with Westley before slicing to short cover, triggering a collapse that saw Essex lose three wickets in 23 balls. Late fireworks came from Simon Harmer, who smashed two sixes en route to a brisk 50 off 36 balls, before falling to Taylor, who also dismissed Charlie Bennett to wrap up the innings.
Despite the defeat, Gloucestershire remain in contention for a semi-final berth as Group A leaders, while Essex’s resounding win gives them momentum heading into the final group-stage fixtures.
