Will O'Rourke Sidelined for Three Months with Back Stress Fracture; Allen, Phillips Also Out of Australia T20Is
New Zealand have been dealt a significant blow ahead of their upcoming home summer, with fast bowler Will O'Rourke ruled out for at least three months due to a stress fracture in his lower back. The 22-year-old, who has made a strong start to his international career, will miss the white-ball series against Australia, England, and West Indies, and remains doubtful for the Test series against West Indies in December.
O'Rourke complained of back stiffness during the recent Test against Zimbabwe and has since been diagnosed with the injury. He will now undergo a three-month strength and conditioning program, with coach Rob Walter expressing hope that surgery will not be required.
"We're really feeling for Will at the moment and wishing him a speedy recovery," Walter said in a statement released by New Zealand Cricket. "He's had such an impressive start to his career, and while it's disappointing, he's resilient and determined to come back stronger."
O'Rourke’s injury is the latest in a series of fitness concerns plaguing the Black Caps ahead of the crucial T20I series against Australia in early October.
Glenn Phillips, who missed the Zimbabwe tour due to a groin injury, has also been ruled out of the three-match T20I series set for October 1, 3, and 4 in Mount Maunganui. Finn Allen will be sidelined for at least three months after undergoing surgery to treat a stress fracture in his right foot.
Meanwhile, captain Mitchell Santner is in a race against time to be fit. Santner returned from The Hundred with groin pain and will require abdominal surgery. Despite this, New Zealand remain hopeful of his inclusion in the squad.
"Mitch is a world-class player and a crucial part of our T20 side, both as a leader and for his all-round skills," Walter noted. "We expect to name him in the squad and then assess how his rehab progresses post-surgery before making a final call on his availability."
With several first-choice players unavailable, Walter sees this as an opportunity for others to step up in what he described as "a hugely exciting and important series against Australia."
On a positive note, fast bowler Ben Sears, who missed the Zimbabwe series due to a side strain, has recovered and is expected to be available for selection against Australia.
The full squad for the Australia series will be announced in the coming weeks.
