Jacks, Cox Power Oval Invincibles to Dominant Win as Final Berth Beckons
Oval Invincibles are on the brink of sealing a direct spot in The Hundred Final at Lord’s after a commanding six-wicket victory over London Spirit at the Kia Oval. Led by explosive knocks from Will Jacks and Jordan Cox, the defending champions chased down a target of 153 with 22 balls to spare, virtually confirming their place in Sunday’s final—barring a highly improbable net run rate swing.
After winning the toss and opting to bowl, Sam Billings' side made an early breakthrough but were initially challenged by an aggressive start from Jamie Smith, who cracked two boundaries off the first two balls of the match. However, Smith’s quickfire 28 off 15 was short-lived, and the Spirit innings lost momentum thereafter despite a record sixth-wicket stand of 54 between Jamie Overton and Ryan Higgins, both of whom finished with 28 from 15 balls.
A total of 152 for 7 was seen as below par on a good surface, with Nathan Sowter (2 for 23) and Sam Curran (1 for 28) leading the Invincibles' bowling effort. Will Jacks also made his mark in the field with a stunning one-handed catch to dismiss Ollie Pope.
The Invincibles' chase started with a minor hiccup as Tawanda Muyeye fell for a first-ball duck. But Jacks and Cox took control with a dominant 64-run stand off just 35 balls. Jacks was the aggressor early on, his innings highlighted by a towering 92-metre six over extra cover off Overton. He departed for a brisk 45 off 27.
Cox, the competition’s leading run-scorer, continued his fine form with 47 off 27 deliveries, including a six and four off Overton before being bowled attempting a ramp shot. His efforts, combined with a powerful cameo from Donovan Ferreira (24* off 9), ensured a smooth finish for the Invincibles, who crossed the line with more than three overs to spare.
Meerkat Match Hero Will Jacks played down his spectacular catch, joking, “We were struggling to see the ball today, so I picked it up late, pure luck!” Reflecting on the performance, he added, “It felt brilliant with the bat. The wicket only got better under lights and Coxy made it easy for me. We've been chasing that top spot—it’s so important to go straight to the final and watch the Eliminator the night before.”
With the win, the Oval Invincibles sit comfortably at the top of the table, needing only to avoid an unlikely 200-plus swing in net run rate to secure automatic qualification for the final at Lord’s on Sunday.
