Kashif Ali Fires as Worcestershire Storm into Semi-Finals with Dominant Win Over Surrey
Worcestershire Rapids stormed into the Metro Bank One-Day Cup semi-finals with a commanding six-wicket victory over Surrey at Visit Worcestershire New Road, clinching top spot in Group A and a crucial home semi-final.
Teenager Dan Lategan struck his maiden List A half-century to set the tone in the chase, while Kashif Ali dazzled with a powerful 80 off 58 balls. Captain Jake Libby then anchored the innings with a composed unbeaten 53 as the Rapids comfortably overhauled Surrey’s 266 for 6 with more than four overs to spare.
Surrey’s Stuttering Start and Atkinson’s Rescue Act
After being asked to bat first, Surrey struggled to build momentum. Tom Taylor made an early breakthrough, bowling Adam Thomas with a seaming delivery in the third over. Ben Foakes managed only six before falling cheaply, leaving the visitors two down early.
Rory Burns looked fluent during his 43, but his dismissal – caught at midwicket off Ben Gibbon – halted Surrey’s progress again. With the middle order failing to convert starts, Surrey slumped to 160 for 5, despite contributions from Ollie Sykes (36) and Josh Blake (43).
It was Gus Atkinson, in only his third List A appearance for Surrey, who breathed life into the innings. The England international showcased his batting prowess, smashing 60 off 48 balls, including nine boundaries, to lift the total close to 250. His innings was ended by Khurram, who picked up 2 for 46, while Taylor also finished with two wickets. Some late blows from Nikhil Gorantla ensured Surrey posted a competitive 266 for 6 from their 49 overs.
Lategan and Kashif Lead the Charge
Worcestershire’s chase got off to a flying start, thanks to a brisk 83-run opening stand between Brett D’Oliveira (45) and 19-year-old Dan Lategan. Making only his fourth List A appearance, Lategan impressed with a fluent 54 off 49 balls, reaching his first half-century in the format before falling to Sykes shortly after.
Enter Kashif Ali, who wasted no time asserting his dominance. Blasting boundaries to all parts, Kashif powered his way to 80 in just 58 balls, putting the Rapids well ahead of the required rate. He fell attempting to clear the rope once again, caught in the deep, but his innings had already taken the game away from Surrey.
Libby, who has been among the tournament’s most consistent performers, continued his fine form with a steady unbeaten 53, guiding his side home with patience and precision. With the required rate dropping to under two runs an over, Worcestershire cruised to victory, finishing on 269 for 4 in the 45th over.
Rapids Set for Home Semi-Final
The convincing win sealed top position in Group A for the Rapids, who now look forward to hosting a semi-final clash on Sunday. For Surrey, it was a disappointing end to their campaign, undone by inconsistent batting and an inability to contain Worcestershire’s aggressive top order.
With in-form players like Kashif, Libby, and the emerging Lategan firing at the right time, Worcestershire will head into the knockouts brimming with confidence.
