Fernandes Inspires Thrilling One-Wicket Win as Middlesex Clinch Knockout Spot
Nathan Fernandes delivered a sensational innings under pressure, scoring 92 off 79 balls to inspire Middlesex to a nerve-shredding one-wicket victory over Lancashire in the Metro Bank One-Day Cup. The dramatic result also booked Middlesex’s place in the quarter-finals.
Facing a daunting target of 292, Middlesex were staring down defeat at 127 for 6 when Fernandes, just 21, joined forces with Seb Morgan (61) in a courageous seventh-wicket stand worth 126. Fernandes, playing with remarkable poise and maturity, guided the chase deep into the final over before falling with just a handful needed. Tailender Noah Cornwell held his nerve to seal the win — a moment that will live long in Middlesex folklore.
Earlier, Lancashire posted 291 for 8, thanks to a late-innings blitz. Captain Marcus Harris top-scored with 64, while explosive contributions came from youngsters Arav Shetty (30), Joe Moores (35), and especially Jack Blatherwick, who hammered a blistering 48 not out from just 20 balls, including four sixes and four fours.
Lancashire’s innings began shakily, with George Bell dismissed for a golden duck. Harris and Michael Jones (42) rebuilt with a steady 61-run partnership before Middlesex bowlers applied the squeeze. Luke Hollman was particularly effective, returning 2 for 30 from his 10 overs, and removed Harris with a clever lbw decision as the left-hander attempted a reverse sweep.
The final flourish came late. With 99 runs plundered from the last nine overs, Lancashire surged to a competitive total — aided by Cornwell’s expensive over that leaked 21 runs.
In reply, Middlesex's chase got off to a rocky start. Joe Cracknell fell early, and wickets tumbled regularly. Harry Singh, Lancashire’s part-time off-spinner, turned in a career-best performance with 4 for 27, tearing through the top and middle order. Josh de Caires (50) offered some resistance before becoming Singh’s final victim.
At 127 for 6, the match looked lost — until Fernandes and Morgan took charge. Fernandes’ innings combined composure and urgency, as he pierced gaps and cleared boundaries with minimal risk. Morgan, who brought up his maiden List A fifty, proved an ideal partner in a partnership that changed the complexion of the match.
Though Morgan eventually holed out on the boundary, Fernandes kept the scoreboard moving until he, too, was dismissed in the final over. But Cornwell, who had earlier endured a tough day with the ball, redeemed himself with the bat by guiding Middlesex home with two balls to spare.
The result was not only a thrilling victory but also a crucial one, catapulting Middlesex into the tournament's knockout rounds in stunning fashion.
