Archie Vaughan's Maiden Century Powers Somerset into One-Day Cup Knockouts
Archie Vaughan announced his arrival with a sublime maiden List A century as Somerset stormed into the Metro Bank One-Day Cup knockouts with a commanding eight-wicket victory over Northamptonshire at the Cooper Associates County Ground.
Chasing a modest target of 239 — adjusted from 238 due to a rain interruption — Somerset made light work of the chase, reaching 240 for 2 in just 42.3 overs. Vaughan, 19, remained unbeaten on 109 off 122 balls, while opening partner Tom Lammonby continued his impressive form with a fluent 83 off 96 deliveries. Their opening stand of 168 laid the perfect platform for a clinical win that sealed Somerset’s place in the next stage of the competition.
Earlier, Northamptonshire’s innings lacked momentum despite a solid 69 from Tim Robinson. James Sales (45) and Justin Broad (38) added useful runs, but the visitors ultimately folded for 238. Kasey Aldridge led Somerset’s attack with 4 for 54, including the crucial wicket of Robinson after a well-paced half-century.
The Steelbacks, who chose to bat, struggled to assert dominance even on a good batting surface. Ricardo Vasconcelos (12) fell early, miscuing Jake Ball to the keeper, and Ravi Bopara’s lean run continued with a mistimed pull off Ben Green for 9. A brief recovery through Robinson and Sales was cut short by a sharp run-out from Vaughan, whose direct hit ended Sales’ innings.
Robinson brought up his fifty in style, launching a six as he upped the tempo, but his dismissal — a smart relay catch on the boundary by Fin Hill off Aldridge — triggered a collapse. From 163 for 3, Northamptonshire lost momentum, losing seven wickets for just 75 runs, with only Stuart van der Merwe (27) and Broad providing late resistance.
In response, Somerset’s openers came out blazing. Both Lammonby and Vaughan struck the ball sweetly from the outset, bringing up their 50-run stand inside eight overs. Lammonby, who has shone throughout the tournament, reached his half-century in 53 balls, finding the boundary nine times.
Vaughan, meanwhile, continued his rich vein of form, bringing up his own fifty off 60 deliveries. The pair’s 168-run partnership became Somerset’s highest-ever List A opening stand against Northamptonshire, surpassing the 155-run effort by Jamie Cox and Marcus Trescothick in 2001.
Lammonby eventually fell for 83, caught and bowled by van der Merwe, but the damage was already done. Lewis Goldsworthy chipped in with 26 before Vaughan fittingly finished the chase, bringing up his hundred with a four and a single. He ended on 109 not out, with 12 boundaries — a career-best that capped an all-format breakout summer for the teenager, and the son of former England captain Michael Vaughan.
With this emphatic win, Somerset capped off the group stage in style and march confidently into the knockouts.
