Halambage Earns Maiden Call-Up as Sri Lanka Eyes T20I Future in Zimbabwe Tour

Halambage Earns Maiden Call-Up as Sri Lanka Eyes T20I Future in Zimbabwe Tour

Sri Lanka has taken a bold step towards the future with the announcement of a revamped T20I squad for the upcoming three-match series in Zimbabwe, starting September 3 in Harare. The most notable inclusion is that of 20-year-old batter Vishen Halambage, who has earned his maiden national call-up following a standout performance in the recent SLC T20 League.

Alongside Halambage, batters Nuwanidu Fernando and Kamil Mishara return to the fold, as Sri Lanka makes five changes from the squad that toured Bangladesh last month. Also joining the team are leg-spinning allrounder Dushan Hemantha and pace bowler Dushmantha Chameera.

Making way are experienced names like Avishka Fernando, Dinesh Chandimal, Jeffrey Vandersay, Eshan Malinga, and the injured Wanindu Hasaranga, indicating a generational shift in the team’s T20I outlook.

Batting Reinforcements Reflect Modern Approach

The selection of Halambage, Mishara, and Nuwanidu appears to align with Sri Lanka’s intent to adopt a more aggressive and modern approach to T20 batting. Both Halambage and Mishara impressed in the SLC T20 League, each hitting a tournament-high six sixes. Mishara, in particular, lit up the tournament with a strike rate of 172.72 and a total of 19 boundaries—second only to Niroshan Dickwella.

While Nuwanidu's strike rate of 124 was more modest, his consistency stood out. He topped the run charts with 155 runs across four innings at an average of 77.50, making a strong case to fill the No. 4 role vacated by Chandimal and Avishka. His performances across domestic competitions and with the Sri Lanka A team have further reinforced his claim.

Dickwella Overlooked Despite Strong Showing

One notable omission is 32-year-old Niroshan Dickwella, who scored 134 runs at a strike rate of 161.44, including two fifties, in the same tournament. However, with Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis firmly established at the top of the order, Dickwella’s path back into the team appears limited as selectors prioritize youth.

Hemantha Edges Out Legspin Competition

In the spin department, Dushan Hemantha replaces the injured Hasaranga, beating out Vijayakanth Viyaskanth and Vandersay. While Viyaskanth was statistically more impressive with five wickets to Hemantha’s four, selectors appear to have favored Hemantha’s all-round abilities—his strong fielding and power-hitting potential likely tipping the scales.

Vandersay’s exclusion is more conclusive; his absence from the SLC T20 League altogether suggests the selectors may have moved on from him in the shortest format.

Malinga Dropped Amid Pace Bowling Depth

Eshan Malinga, who had forced his way into the squad for the Bangladesh series after a solid IPL 2025, finds himself dropped following a poor showing domestically. He was the most expensive bowler in the SLC T20 League, conceding runs at 11.71 per over. In contrast, Chameera, Chamika Karunaratne, and others outshone him both in economy and impact.

Chameera returns to strengthen a seam attack that includes Matheesha Pathirana, Nuwan Thushara, and Binura Fernando, alongside the in-form Karunaratne.

The Road Ahead

The squad will be led by Charith Asalanka and features a blend of youth and experience. With the Asia Cup and T20 World Cup in the horizon, this tour could serve as a crucial testing ground for Sri Lanka’s next generation of T20 stars.
