Litton Das Eyes Big Totals Ahead of Asia Cup, Sees Netherlands Series as Key Preparation
Bangladesh T20I captain Litton Das is aiming to build a habit of scoring big totals as his side prepares for the upcoming three-match T20I series against the Netherlands, set to begin on August 30 at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium. With the Asia Cup on the horizon, Litton views the series as a vital opportunity to fine-tune the team's performance.
"In international cricket, there is no small team," Litton told reporters in Sylhet on Thursday. "Bangladesh have lost to different teams before—it's nothing new. What matters is how well we play."
The wicketkeeper-batter emphasized the importance of setting high benchmarks in T20Is, stating that his team must consistently target scores of 200-250. “Abu Dhabi will be batting-friendly, like Sylhet. But to score 200-250, we also need to build a habit,” said Litton. “Conditions there are quite similar to Sylhet. We've trained under dew here, so the players know what to expect.”
Welcoming the return of Nurul Hasan and Saif Hasan to the T20I setup, Litton highlighted the long-term vision behind their selection. “I’m very happy they’re in. Sohan has been consistent for years. Saif’s aggressive mindset is what we needed in the middle order, and he can bowl a bit too. It’s not like they’ll be dropped after one or two matches,” he added.
Although inclement weather forced the cancellation of Bangladesh's practice session on Thursday, the visiting Dutch side made full use of the conditions, completing a productive net session in the afternoon.
Despite Bangladesh being favourites on paper, Netherlands captain Scott Edwards remains optimistic about his team's chances. Fresh off their qualification for the ICC T20 World Cup in India, where they emerged champions of the European Group, the Dutch are looking to carry forward their momentum.
"You always go into every series trying to win. We expect to play good cricket, and if we play well enough, absolutely, we've got a chance," said Edwards.
He credited the Netherlands’ increasing confidence to their recent success in high-pressure matches, including World Cup qualifiers. “The belief in the squad has been growing for a while now. Recent performances show we're capable of beating any team on our day.”
Edwards also views the series as an essential stepping stone ahead of the T20 World Cup. “After qualifying for the World Cup, getting match experience in Asia was one of our first goals. Playing three T20s against a strong side like Bangladesh in their home conditions is perfect for our preparation,” he said.
Several Dutch players, he noted, have experience playing in the subcontinent, which could prove vital. “More often than not, when we play a series like this, you're probably getting two or three practice matches before the first game. A lot of our guys have experienced this before. For the newer guys, they will try and fast forward their preparations.”
The Bangladesh vs Netherlands series will not only serve as key preparation for both sides ahead of global tournaments, but could also offer a glimpse into how ready they are to compete at the highest level under pressure.
