Sam Northeast Returns to Kent After Eight Years Away
Glamorgan captain Sam Northeast is set to return to his home county of Kent after signing a two-year contract, marking the end of an eight-year absence that included stints at Hampshire and Glamorgan.
The 35-year-old batter, who began his professional career with Kent in 2007, rejoins the club after a highly successful spell at Glamorgan, where he firmly established himself as one of the most prolific run-scorers in county cricket.
During his four-year stay at Glamorgan, Northeast broke records and played pivotal roles in the club’s success. He famously scored an unbeaten 410 against Leicestershire in 2022 — a Glamorgan club record — and followed it with an unbeaten 335 against Middlesex at Lord’s in 2024, the highest first-class score ever recorded at the iconic ground.
In the most recent season, Northeast was instrumental in Glamorgan’s Metro Bank One-Day Cup triumph, scoring key runs in the final at Trent Bridge. He also amassed 780 runs at an average of 48.75 in the County Championship, helping guide Glamorgan to the verge of promotion from Division Two.
Despite discussions with Glamorgan about extending his contract, Northeast's desire to be closer to his young family — who remained in Kent throughout his time away — was a decisive factor in his return.
"I'm delighted to be returning home to Kent next season," Northeast said. "I believe I still have a great deal to contribute across all formats, and while I've enjoyed my time away, I know that coming back to Canterbury is the right decision at this stage of my career."
He added, "As someone who grew up in the county, Kent has always been close to my heart. I always knew I would return to my boyhood club, and I'm proud to once again wear the White Horse."
Northeast first played for Kent as a teenager after progressing through their Academy system. Over a decade with the club, he made more than 300 appearances and scored over 13,500 runs across formats, including 24 centuries. He captained Kent between 2015 and 2017, averaging 44.79 during his leadership tenure, before departing for Hampshire in 2018 under strained circumstances.
Kent’s Director of Cricket, Simon Cook, welcomed Northeast’s return: "Sam was our top target when it became apparent that he was available, and he will add top-order talent and experience.
"We're delighted that he has chosen to return to Kent next season, and our young batters in both the first team and Talent Pathway will draw from his vast experience. I'm sure his return home will be greatly received by our members and supporters."
Northeast is expected to play a key leadership and mentoring role as Kent continues to focus on developing homegrown talent while competing across all formats.
