St Lucia Kings Rise to No. 1 After Dominant Win Over Patriots

A blistering opening partnership and a clinical bowling performance led the St Lucia Kings to a commanding seven-wicket win over the St Kitts and Nevis Patriots in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2025, pushing them to the top of the points table.

Chasing a competitive target of 178, the Kings made light work of the run chase, reaching 180 for 3 in just 17 overs. The foundation was laid by explosive starts from openers Tim Seifert and Johnson Charles, who added 115 runs in only 62 balls. Charles, in particular, was in destructive form, smashing 47 off just 17 deliveries, while Seifert anchored the innings with a fluent 68 off 45 balls.

The Kings’ chase began steadily, with only five runs coming off the first over. But what followed was carnage – 13 runs in the second over, 18 in the third, and 21 in the fifth – as Charles went after Naseem Shah and others with aggressive intent. By the end of the powerplay, the Kings had raced to 72 for no loss.

Although Charles fell in the seventh over to Waqar Salamkheil, the momentum remained firmly with the Kings. Seifert and Ackeem Auguste (29 off 20) kept the scoreboard ticking, adding 60 for the second wicket. Even after Seifert’s dismissal in the 15th over, the game was well under control. Roston Chase (15*) and Tim David (16*) completed the formalities with ease.

Earlier, the Patriots, after being put in to bat by Kings captain David Wiese, posted 177 for 3. Mohammad Rizwan anchored their innings with a fighting unbeaten 60 off 41 balls, but the Patriots never truly accelerated. Rizwan’s partnerships with Kyle Mayers (27 off 25) and Jason Holder (21* off 14) helped the Patriots put up a respectable total, but it was never enough on a batting-friendly surface.

The star with the ball for the Kings was left-arm wrist-spinner Tabraiz Shamsi, who returned outstanding figures of 2 for 17 in his four overs. He removed the dangerous Andre Fletcher (37) and played a key role in throttling the Patriots’ momentum through the middle overs. For his efforts, Shamsi was named Player of the Match.

With this win, the St Lucia Kings now lead the CPL 2025 standings with 8 points from six matches. The St Kitts and Nevis Patriots, meanwhile, languish in fifth place with just 4 points from seven games, despite Rizwan’s valiant effort.

Match Summary:

  • St Kitts and Nevis Patriots: 177/3 (Rizwan 60*, Fletcher 37; Shamsi 2-17)

  • St Lucia Kings: 180/3 in 17 overs (Seifert 68, Charles 47; Naseem 2-35)

  • Result: St Lucia Kings won by 7 wickets

The Kings will now look to maintain their winning momentum as the tournament heads into its final stages, while the Patriots face an uphill battle to stay in playoff contention.
