Trent Rockets Progress to Men’s Hundred Final After Rain Forces Eliminator Abandonment

A frustratingly wet evening at The Kia Oval saw Trent Rockets advance to the final of the Men’s Hundred after their Eliminator clash against Northern Superchargers was abandoned due to persistent rain. The Rockets progressed by virtue of finishing higher in the group stage standings, setting up a showdown with the Oval Invincibles in Sunday’s final at Lord’s.

After a series of rain delays that limited play to just 80 legal deliveries, umpires James Middlebrook and Martin Saggers called off the match at 9:52pm, nearly four hours after the scheduled start. Rockets had made a modest 12 for 0 in response to Superchargers’ 119 for 5 before the final downpour ended hopes of a result.

Superchargers Pay Price for Group-Stage Slip

The Superchargers' campaign came to an unfortunate end, but one largely of their own making. Heading into the final week of the group stage, they were level on points with the Rockets, but a loss in their final match on Tuesday proved costly. Rockets’ win the following day secured them second place and, ultimately, a place in the final thanks to the lack of a reserve day.

“It is what it is,” said a disappointed Harry Brook. “Everyone saw the forecast was going to be shocking from about five or six o’clock. We can’t do anything about it.”

Brook expressed frustration at the scheduling, suggesting the match could have been played earlier or even moved to the previous day. “There’s so many things you could say,” he added, “but this is how they’ve set the schedule.”

Rockets Hold Nerve in Limited Play

Despite the limited action, Rockets looked composed. Captain David Willey made a strong start, removing Zak Crawley with his third ball after winning the toss. With the threat of rain looming, Willey frontloaded his 20-ball spell, anticipating a shortened innings.

Dan Lawrence was the standout for the Superchargers with an unbeaten 44, anchoring their innings alongside cameos from Dawid Malan and David Miller. The Superchargers posted 119 for 5 from 75 balls before the second rain break halted proceedings.

In response, Rockets briefly began their chase twice under revised targets – first 134 from 75 balls, then 105 from 55 – but both efforts were interrupted by further rain. Tom Banton’s boundary and a handful of extras pushed Rockets to 12 for 0 before the match was ultimately abandoned.

Final Awaits: Rockets vs Invincibles

Trent Rockets will now face defending champions Oval Invincibles, who are aiming for their third consecutive title. The Invincibles, having topped the table, have had the full week to prepare and will be boosted by the return of leg-spinner Adam Zampa, replacing Rashid Khan.

Marcus Stoinis, who dismissed both Brook and Miller in the Eliminator, acknowledged the chaotic build-up but remained upbeat. “It’s a bit of chaos, but I think it will be fine,” he said.

Reflecting on their earlier group-stage clash with the Invincibles, which the Rockets lost, Stoinis added: “It was some of the best hitting there’s been in any cricket, really. But to be honest, we haven’t really thought about it – we haven’t had a chance!”

The Men’s Hundred Final between Oval Invincibles and Trent Rockets takes place at Lord’s on Sunday, with less than 24 hours separating the Eliminator’s end and the title decider.
