Liam Dawson’s Heroics Trump Imam-Ul-Haq Century as Hampshire Reach Metro Bank Cup Final

Liam Dawson produced a career-best List A innings of 142 to guide Hampshire to a thrilling 18-run victory (DLS method) over Yorkshire in the semi-final of the Metro Bank One-Day Cup at Scarborough. The win secures Hampshire a place in the final against Worcestershire at Trent Bridge on September 20.

In a rain-affected match reduced to 41 overs per side, Dawson’s brilliance with the bat turned the tide after Hampshire found themselves struggling at 78 for 4. The 35-year-old all-rounder’s 116-ball knock, studded with seven sixes, anchored the innings and propelled his side to 304 for 6. His 136-run partnership with Scott Currie for the sixth wicket proved decisive, with Currie contributing an aggressive unbeaten 61 — his own List A best — from just 40 deliveries.

Yorkshire, chasing a revised target of 254 in 41 overs due to a rain delay, looked well-placed at 171 for 3 in the 31st over, riding on a fluent 105 from Pakistan opener Imam-Ul-Haq. But a sudden collapse, triggered by Currie and supported by Dawson’s spin, saw them lose five wickets for just 64 runs, ending their innings at 235 for 8.

The loss continued Yorkshire’s woes in the competition, marking their 19th defeat in their last 22 List A semi-final appearances.

Dawson Anchors and Accelerates

After being inserted to bat, Hampshire were rocked early as Matt Milnes continued his fine form with the ball, taking the first three wickets and reducing the visitors to 53 for 3. Milnes, fresh from a 7-wicket haul in the group stage, accounted for Fletcha Middleton, Ali Orr, and captain Nick Gubbins.

Dawson survived an early scare on 6, offering a sharp return catch to Ben Cliff, but went on to stabilize the innings. He found a steady partner in 17-year-old Ben Mayes, who made a mature 37 in a crucial 89-run stand for the fifth wicket.

It was in the final overs where Dawson and Currie unleashed carnage, adding 136 runs in the last 13 overs, including 75 from the final five.

Yorkshire’s Chase Falters Late

Set a steep DLS-adjusted target, Yorkshire began cautiously. Adam Lyth and Imam put on 43 for the opening wicket before rain halted proceedings. After the break, Lyth fell early, but Imam continued in commanding fashion, reaching his fifty in 52 balls and then adding a 99-run stand with Will Luxton (30).

Just as Yorkshire seemed in control, Luxton fell to Eddie Jack, and wickets began to tumble. Imam reached his fourth List A century of the season off 96 balls but was soon run out in a mix-up involving Fin Bean — a key turning point.

Currie then removed Bean and James Wharton, while Dawson chipped in with the wicket of Harry Duke. The collapse left Yorkshire needing 47 from the final 29 balls with just three wickets in hand, a task too steep in the face of disciplined Hampshire bowling.

Final Awaits

Hampshire, the 2018 champions, will now face Worcestershire — who beat Somerset in the other semi-final — in the final at Trent Bridge.

For Yorkshire, it was another painful chapter in their limited-overs history, despite the efforts of Imam, who now departs for national duties.
