Sonny Baker Set for England ODI Debut Against South Africa at Headingley
Sonny Baker, the uncapped Hampshire fast bowler, is set to make his England debut in the opening match of the One Day International (ODI) series against South Africa on Tuesday.
The 22-year-old quick has been named in the playing XI for the clash at Headingley, following an impressive domestic season highlighted by his performances in the Men’s Hundred. Representing Manchester Originals, Baker took nine wickets in seven matches, including a memorable hat-trick against Northern Superchargers at Old Trafford on August 17.
Despite having only 11 List A matches under his belt, Baker’s raw pace—regularly clocking speeds around 90mph (145kph)—and strong showing with the England Lions during the winter helped earn him an England development contract earlier this year. His selection marks a significant step forward in what many believe could be a promising international career.
Joining Baker in the pace attack will be the returning Jofra Archer, who plays his first ODI since the 2025 Champions Trophy, and Brydon Carse. The trio adds considerable firepower to England’s bowling unit.
Harry Brook will lead the side in what is his second series as ODI captain, following his appointment earlier this summer. England's top order will feature Jamie Smith and Ben Duckett, who continue to develop their partnership at the top of the innings. Veteran Joe Root slots in at No. 3, with Jos Buttler taking the gloves in the middle order.
All-round options Jacob Bethell and Will Jacks provide depth, while leg-spinner Adil Rashid completes the XI.
