Jordan Cox Earns England Recall After Standout Hundred Campaign
Jordan Cox has been called up to England’s T20I squad for the upcoming series against Ireland, following a stellar campaign in the Men’s Hundred where he was named Player of the Tournament.
The 24-year-old batter was instrumental in Oval Invincibles’ third consecutive title win, scoring 367 runs at an average of 61.16 and an explosive strike rate of 173.93. Cox capped off the tournament with a vital 40 off 28 balls in the final at Lord’s, helping his side to a 26-run victory over Trent Rockets.
Following the final, Cox expressed his determination to break into the England setup, saying he would "continue to bang the England door down." His recall follows a string of near-misses, including a broken thumb that ruled him out of a planned Test debut in New Zealand and a side strain suffered while scoring a century for Essex earlier this summer.
Cox made his T20I debut against Australia in September 2024, but managed just 17 and 0 in his two appearances. He also featured in three ODIs during England’s tour of the West Indies later that year.
His inclusion adds depth to a second-string England squad, led by Jacob Bethell, for the three-match T20I series in Dublin on September 17, 19, and 21. The original 14-man squad had faced criticism for its lack of specialist batters, with allrounders such as Liam Dawson, Rehan Ahmed, or Jamie Overton expected to bat as high as No.6.
The announcement comes a day after England’s 50-over side suffered a heavy seven-wicket defeat to South Africa at Headingley, having been dismissed for just 131 in 24.3 overs.
Cox’s form and resilience through setbacks make him a timely addition as England looks to rebuild and experiment ahead of future international commitments.
