Bopara Masterclass Sends Northants to Finals Day, Stuns Surrey in Vitality Blast Thriller
Veteran allrounder Ravi Bopara rolled back the years with a breathtaking century to power Northamptonshire into the Vitality Blast Finals Day, knocking out tournament favourites Surrey on a rain-affected night at The Kia Oval.
In a shortened 14-over contest, the 40-year-old Bopara produced one of the finest knocks of his 22-year T20 career, smashing an unbeaten 105 off just 46 balls, including 12 fours and five sixes, to steer Northants from early trouble to a commanding total.
Northants had slumped to 1 for 2 in the opening over after losing Ricardo Vasconcelos and David Willey to Jordan Clark, but Bopara's calmness and counter-attack turned the tide in stunning fashion.
"When I feel a bit dead, that's when I’m at my best"
Reflecting on his match-winning performance, Bopara revealed a surprising mindset behind his success.
"I didn’t have that fire in my belly today, and that’s when I prefer it — when I feel a bit dead," he told Sky Sports. "That’s when I feel like I’m going to perform my best. It doesn’t always work, but [when it does] it’s good."
Bopara, who first played T20 cricket in 2003, praised Northants’ aggressive mindset in tough conditions:
"We knew there was going to be a bit of rain and movement early on, but our philosophy was 'just keep going' and today it came off. If someone has a day out — gets a quick 80 or 100 — you're away. Today, it was me."
Bowling Unit Holds Nerve in Slippery Conditions
Despite a late surge from Surrey captain Sam Curran, who scored a valiant 69 off 38 balls*, Northants' bowlers, led by Willey, held their nerve in the final overs. Bopara credited the bowling group for sticking to their plan.
"It was very slippery out there. The chat was just to hold length — that was the hardest ball to hit. We drifted a bit in the middle but came back strong at the death."
Willey, who played a crucial role with the ball, hailed Bopara’s brilliance:
"We got him for his experience, and that's exactly what we got … big game, and he stood up. He’s had murmurs of retirement, but hopefully we can keep him for one more year. That was exceptional power and skill."
Bopara now heads to Edgbaston next weekend hoping to win his second Blast title, the first coming in 2019 with Essex, when he also played a match-winning knock in the final.
Northants Eye Third T20 Blast Title
With the win, Northants are two matches away from claiming their third Vitality Blast title, which would put them level with Leicestershire and Hampshire as the tournament’s most successful teams.
"For a small club like us to reach Finals Day is huge," Willey added. "It was a fantastic game, and we’re delighted to be there. Hopefully, we can build on this momentum."
Curran Gutted After Near Miss
For Surrey skipper Sam Curran, the loss was a bitter blow just days after winning his third consecutive Men's Hundred title with the Oval Invincibles. Surrey, also chasing a fourth straight County Championship title, now have to regroup quickly.
"We’re gutted. It hurts to get so close and lose. But credit to Northants — Ravi played an incredible knock, and they held their nerve. Sometimes, you just have to say ‘well played’ and move on."
Curran admitted the wet conditions made defending and bowling difficult:
"I thought 140 would be a good score with the wet outfield. When we were keeping it around two a ball, I felt we were in the game. But that one special innings made the difference."
Despite the setback, Curran remained optimistic about the season:
"The boys are in a good place with the four-day stuff. We’ll dust ourselves down and come running in hard on Monday."
