Mayank Agarwal Signs with Yorkshire for Remainder of County Championship

India opener Mayank Agarwal is set to join Yorkshire on a short-term contract for the remainder of the ongoing County Championship season. Agarwal is expected to link up with the squad ahead of their upcoming match against Somerset in Taunton, scheduled to begin on September 8.

This will mark Agarwal’s first-ever stint in county cricket. He is expected to feature in three matches before returning to India to prepare for the 2025–26 Ranji Trophy season, where he will continue to lead Karnataka across formats.

The 34-year-old was last seen in competitive action during the Maharaja T20 Trophy, Karnataka’s premier domestic T20 competition. Earlier in the year, he was part of the IPL 2025 title-winning squad of Royal Challengers Bengaluru, having joined the franchise as an injury replacement for Devdutt Padikkal.

Agarwal is no stranger to English conditions, having toured England with the Indian Test side in 2021–22, and again for the World Test Championship Final against Australia in June 2023. Although in line to open during the 2021–22 Test series, he was ruled out of the opener due to a concussion. He has also previously toured the UK with the India A team.

One of the most experienced batters in the Indian domestic circuit, Agarwal boasts an impressive first-class record of 8050 runs from 190 innings at an average of 43.98, including 18 centuries and 44 half-centuries. At the international level, he has accumulated 1488 runs in 36 Test innings at an average of 41.33, with four centuries to his name — the highest being a monumental 243 against South Africa. His most recent appearance in Test cricket came in March 2022 against Sri Lanka in Bengaluru.

Agarwal joins a growing list of Indian players participating in the UK domestic circuit this season. Other notable names include Khaleel Ahmed (Essex), Tilak Varma (Hampshire), Yuzvendra Chahal (Northamptonshire), Ishan Kishan (Nottinghamshire), and Sai Kishore (Surrey). Jaydev Unadkat is also set to join Sussex later this month.
