Ross Taylor Comes Out of Retirement to Represent Samoa in T20 World Cup Qualifiers
Former New Zealand cricket star Ross Taylor has officially come out of retirement to play for Samoa in the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup Asia-East Asia Pacific Qualifier, marking a historic return to international cricket — this time for his ancestral nation.
Taylor, now 41, becomes eligible to represent Samoa after completing a mandatory three-year stand-down period following his last appearance for New Zealand in April 2022. He qualifies through his mother, who is of Samoan heritage.
Announcing the news via social media, Taylor said, "It's official – I'm proud to announce that I'll be pulling on the blue and representing Samoa in cricket. This is more than just a return to the game I love – it's a huge honour to represent my heritage, culture, villages, and family."
A veteran of 450 international matches for New Zealand, Taylor scored a remarkable 18,199 runs across all formats — including 7,683 in Tests, 8,607 in ODIs, and 1,909 in T20Is. He was an integral part of the New Zealand side that won the inaugural ICC World Test Championship in 2021.
Speaking on his comeback, Taylor revealed that while he had initially expected to remain involved in cricket through coaching, the opportunity to play for Samoa was too meaningful to pass up.
"I always thought it would be more in coaching and other avenues. I never thought I'd play, but as the opportunity arose, yeah, looking forward to getting out there and hopefully doing my best for Samoa."
Despite acknowledging the physical challenge of returning to top-level cricket after retirement, Taylor remains optimistic.
"I obviously haven't played a lot of cricket like we used to, so it'd be a bit of a shock to the system. But I've played in some tournaments... I’ve had a couple of months to train and see how the body reacts. Hopefully, it's good enough."
Samoa will begin their campaign in the regional qualifier on October 8 in Oman, facing Oman and Papua New Guinea in their group matches. This tournament is the final step in Samoa’s journey toward qualifying for the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.
Taylor's return is expected to bring not just experience but also global attention to Samoa's cricketing ambitions.
