Shreyas Iyer in Spotlight as India A Squad Selection Nears
Despite being one of the top performers in the 2025 IPL season, Shreyas Iyer found himself omitted from India's T20 squad for the upcoming Asia Cup in the UAE. The exclusion sparked widespread debate and disappointment among fans and pundits alike. However, a fresh opportunity may be around the corner for the stylish middle-order batter, with Australia A set to tour India later this month.
The upcoming India A vs Australia A series — featuring two four-day red-ball matches and three white-ball games — could be a platform for Iyer to reaffirm his place in the national reckoning. While his inclusion in the squad is all but certain, the key question now revolves around the role he will play. There is speculation that Iyer may be handed a leadership position, either as captain or vice-captain.
Currently, Iyer is in Bengaluru representing West Zone in the Duleep Trophy semifinal against Central Zone. Although his first-innings performance was modest — a 25-run knock ended by Khaleel Ahmed — it is unlikely to affect his selection chances for the India A side. His overall IPL form and red-ball credentials are expected to hold greater weight.
The Australia A tour, which begins with the first four-day game in Lucknow on September 16, comes just a day after the Duleep Trophy final (September 11–15). The second four-day match will follow from September 23 to 26, also in Lucknow, with the white-ball games scheduled in Kanpur on September 30, October 3, and October 5.
Iyer’s likely participation in the red-ball leg suggests the selectors view him as a contender for India’s Test squad for the upcoming home series against the West Indies in October. It could also open doors for inclusion in white-ball squads for India’s tour of Australia later this year.
Apart from Iyer, several standout performers in the ongoing Duleep Trophy are under the selectors' radar. Players such as Nitish Reddy, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Sai Sudharsan, N Jagadeesan, Ruturaj Gaikwad, and Rajat Patidar are being closely monitored.
With the Duleep Trophy semifinals concluding on September 7, the India A squad announcement is expected shortly thereafter. For Iyer and many others, the Australia A series may well be the gateway to bigger opportunities on the international stage.
