Devastating Dickson Powers Somerset to Finals Day Glory
Sean Dickson played the innings of a lifetime, blasting an unbeaten 71 off just 26 balls, as Somerset stormed into the Vitality Blast Finals Day with a thrilling four-wicket victory over Birmingham Bears at the Cooper Associates County Ground.
Chasing 191 for victory in the high-stakes quarter-final, Somerset found themselves needing 19 runs off the final over. But Dickson, in blistering form, sealed the chase with two massive sixes and a straight-driven four, sending the home crowd into raptures and booking Somerset’s spot at Finals Day.
Davies Dominates Early, But Bears Fall Short
After winning the toss, Birmingham raced to 82 in the powerplay, with Rob Yates (25 off 10) setting the tone by hitting every delivery of Riley Meredith’s second over to the boundary. Alex Davies then took over, hammering 71 from just 39 balls, including 13 fours, as the visitors surged to 119 at the halfway mark.
But the Bears lost momentum after Davies fell to Ben Green in the 12th over, attempting a ramp shot that backfired. Green (2 for 30), captain Lewis Gregory, and spinner Lewis Goldsworthy applied the brakes during the middle overs, restricting Birmingham to 190 for six—a total that seemed just par on a typically high-scoring Taunton pitch. Remarkably, the Bears failed to clear the ropes even once in their innings.
Abell Anchors, Dickson Destroys
In response, Somerset made a measured start. Tom Kohler-Cadmore struck the match’s first six in the third over, but wickets at regular intervals saw the home side fall to 73 for two at the halfway stage, with the required rate creeping above 11 per over.
Tom Abell held firm with a composed 51 off 39 balls, while Dickson launched a counter-attack that would ultimately decide the match. The pair kept Somerset in the hunt, but with 19 required from the final over and pressure mounting, it seemed the Bears were favourites.
That’s when Dickson unleashed his final flurry—finishing with 5 fours and 6 sixes—to snatch victory with just one ball to spare.
Turning Point
The key moment came when Davies, who had looked unstoppable, was dismissed attempting a ramp, triggering a middle-order collapse and denying Birmingham the late flourish they desperately needed.
Despite Oliver Hannon-Dalby’s excellent return of 3 for 24, including two wickets in a potentially game-changing 18th over, the Bears were left stunned by Dickson's heroics.
