Sam Curran Recalled to England T20I Squad; Ben Duckett Rested
England have recalled all-rounder Sam Curran to their T20I squad for the upcoming home series against South Africa and Ireland, while top-order batter Ben Duckett has been rested following a dip in form.
Curran's return marks his first selection in an England white-ball squad under head coach Brendon McCullum, and comes in the wake of England’s recent ODI series loss to South Africa. The 27-year-old, a standout performer in England's last ICC white-ball triumph, had fallen out of favour in recent months but forced his way back through sheer weight of performances.
Curran impressed in the T20 Blast, scoring 365 runs and taking 21 wickets in 15 matches. He also played a pivotal role in Oval Invincibles’ title-winning campaign in The Hundred, contributing 238 runs and 12 wickets in nine matches. His inclusion is expected to strengthen England’s bowling unit, which came under scrutiny for its reliance on part-timers like Jacob Bethell and Will Jacks during the recent ODIs.
Duckett Given Break After Lean Patch
Meanwhile, opener Ben Duckett has been given a break from international duty. The 30-year-old played a key role in England’s drawn five-Test series against India earlier this year, amassing 462 runs. However, his recent form has dipped sharply, with just one score above 20 in his last ten innings — eight of those in The Hundred and two in the ODIs against South Africa.
With demanding tours of New Zealand and Australia on the horizon, the selectors have opted to rest Duckett to manage his workload and allow him to rediscover form ahead of a busy winter.
Potts Withdrawn for Red-Ball Focus
In another squad update, fast bowler Matthew Potts has been withdrawn from the T20Is against Ireland to allow him to participate in the County Championship. Potts is seen as a potential option for England’s Ashes squad, especially following Jamie Overton’s recent decision to retire from red-ball cricket.
