Prenelan Subrayen’s Bowling Action Cleared by ICC Testing Centre
South African offspin allrounder Prenelan Subrayen has been cleared to continue bowling after his action was found to be legal by an independent testing centre, following scrutiny during the team’s recent tour of Australia.
Subrayen, who made his Test debut earlier this year and picked up his maiden ODI wicket in Cairns on August 19, was reported for a suspect action during that tour. Although he was never officially suspended from bowling, South Africa chose to rest him from the remaining matches in Australia and excluded him from the ongoing series in England.
According to an ICC statement, Subrayen underwent testing in Brisbane on August 26, where his action was assessed in accordance with the ICC Illegal Bowling Regulations. The results confirmed that “the amount of elbow extension for all his deliveries was within the 15-degree level of tolerance permitted.”
This marks the third instance in Subrayen’s career where his bowling action has come under review. First reported in December 2012, he was placed in a Cricket South Africa (CSA) rehabilitation programme and cleared in early 2013. A second incident occurred during the Champions League T20 in 2014, followed by a suspension in November 2015 when all his deliveries exceeded the permissible limit. After failing a reassessment in January 2016, he was eventually cleared two months later in March.
Despite the setbacks, Subrayen has remained a consistent performer in South Africa’s domestic circuit since 2011. His recent inclusion in both red and white-ball squads reflects his value to the national setup as they prepare for upcoming ICC tournaments, including the next two white-ball World Cups.
The clearance now paves the way for Subrayen’s potential return to international action, with South Africa expected to consider him for future series as they manage their spin-bowling resources heading into a busy international calendar.
