Lancashire Hold Nerve to Overcome Surrey in High-Scoring Clash at Beckenham
Lancashire Women took a significant step towards the Metro Bank Cup semi-finals with a tense but ultimately comfortable four-wicket victory over Surrey at Beckenham.
Chasing 226 for victory, Lancashire reached their target with 24 balls to spare, finishing on 227 for 6, thanks largely to a composed unbeaten 67 from Seren Smale and a solid 59 from Emma Lamb. Despite a spirited bowling effort from Surrey’s Alexa Stonehouse, who claimed 3 for 34, the visitors held their nerve to seal the win.
Earlier, Surrey posted a competitive 225 after being put in to bat, recovering from a precarious 60 for 5. Kalea Moore played a standout knock of 67—her career-best in List A cricket—while Stonehouse backed up her all-round credentials with 48, the pair adding 55 for the seventh wicket. Grace Potts starred with the ball for Lancashire, taking 3 for 31, with Hannah Jones supporting well with 2 for 33.
Surrey’s innings began poorly, losing key wickets in quick succession. After Bryony Smith was dropped on 14, Potts dismissed her with a superb one-handed return catch. Alice Capsey was run out for 5 and Paige Scholfield fell cheaply to Jones. Despite resistance from Phoebe Franklin (25) and Moore, Lancashire’s bowlers continued to chip away, with Potts cleaning up the tail in the final over.
In reply, Lancashire’s openers Gaby Lewis and Lamb set the tone with a 74-run stand. Lewis fell for 39, but Lamb continued fluently before being dismissed for 59 by a sharp catch from Franklin off Stonehouse.
Stonehouse struck again soon after, removing Fi Morris for 6 and briefly sparking hopes of a Surrey fightback. Ellie Threlkeld contributed a handy 21 before becoming the victim of an acrobatic one-handed catch from Smith off Moore.
Smale, however, remained composed, bringing up her half-century with a boundary through midwicket and steering her side closer to victory. A flurry of late wickets, including Lister (23) and Collins (0), gave Surrey a brief glimmer, but Kate Cross sealed the match in style with a straight boundary off Franklin.
Despite the defeat, Surrey found positives in the performances of Moore and Stonehouse. However, it was Lancashire’s composure and depth that proved decisive, keeping them firmly in contention for a place in the knockout stages.
