Hampshire Openers Set Up Crushing Win to Secure Semi-Final Spot in One-Day Cup
Hampshire Women stormed into the semi-finals of the Metro Bank One-Day Cup with a dominant nine-wicket victory over Durham Women in a rain-reduced contest, thanks to a blistering 152-run opening stand between Maia Bouchier and Rhianna Southby.
Chasing a revised DLS target of 171 in 37 overs after rain interrupted play, Hampshire reached 174 for 1 with more than 13 overs to spare, maintaining their position at the top of the table and sealing a semi-final berth with two matches to play.
The openers set the tone early, with Bouchier finishing unbeaten on 93 off 84 balls, and Southby contributing a fluent 58 from 51 deliveries. The pair raced to 74 in the 10-over powerplay and had amassed 144 without loss after 19 overs when rain brought a halt to proceedings at 3.30pm. Play resumed after an 80-minute delay, with Hampshire needing just 27 more runs from 18 overs. Though Southby was bowled by Grace Thompson soon after the restart, Freya Kemp joined Bouchier to complete the chase comfortably in the 24th over.
Earlier, Durham posted 224 for 9 after electing to bat, thanks largely to a defiant 88 from skipper Hollie Armitage, who anchored the innings after coming in during the eighth over. Armitage, who struck nine boundaries and faced 108 balls, found meaningful support only in the latter stages as 18-year-old Grace Thompson hit a career-best 39 in a vital 72-run stand for the eighth wicket.
Durham had slumped to 144 for 7 before the late resistance, with Hampshire’s bowlers keeping a tight grip throughout. Georgia Adams led the charge with 3 for 41, while Freya Davies (2 for 30) and Bex Tyson (2 for 40) applied consistent pressure. Davies was particularly effective early, removing both Durham openers cheaply during the powerplay.
In reply, Bouchier was at her elegant best, reaching her fifth half-century of the tournament from 47 balls and dominating the Durham bowling attack with crisp strokeplay. Southby complemented her brilliantly, reaching her fifty off just 45 balls, including a towering six – the only one of the match.
Durham’s bowlers toiled under floodlights and gloomy skies, struggling to contain Hampshire’s aggressive approach. With the loss, Durham remain in fifth place with two games left and a crucial clash against fourth-placed Surrey looming next Saturday at Chester-le-Street.
