Kohler-Cadmore Shines Against Former Club as Somerset Start Strong Before Rain Halts Play

Somerset opener Tom Kohler-Cadmore struck a fluent 76 against his former side Yorkshire as the hosts reached 155 for 3 on a weather-affected opening day of their County Championship Division One clash at the Cooper Associates County Ground.

Only 42 overs were possible before a dramatic thunderstorm and heavy rain brought an early end to proceedings, leaving the outfield unplayable. Umpires Rob Bailey and Mark Newell conducted an inspection at 4:30pm but deemed conditions unfit for a resumption.

Yorkshire had won the toss and elected to bowl first — a decision that initially paid off when George Hill struck twice in the opening 10 overs. Archie Vaughan was the first to fall, edging behind to Jonny Bairstow for 10, followed by Tom Lammonby, who misjudged a ball that clattered into his off stump.

However, Kohler-Cadmore and James Rew soon steadied the ship with a commanding third-wicket partnership. Rew, after a scratchy start, grew into his innings, while Kohler-Cadmore looked in imperious touch. Displaying aggression against both seam and spin, the right-hander reached his half-century off just 55 balls, peppering the boundary with 11 fours and two sixes — both maximums coming off Dom Bess, lofted straight down the ground.

By lunch, Somerset had recovered to 114 for 2. The afternoon session was cut short, but not before Rew reached his 50 off 91 balls, including eight boundaries, continuing his fine form this season.

Kohler-Cadmore’s entertaining knock came to an end on 76 when he took one risk too many, advancing down the track to Jordan Thompson and edging a sharp chance to Hill at first slip. He faced 110 deliveries in total.

Tom Abell joined Rew at the crease and had made a cautious start when the players were forced off the field amid thunder, lightning, and darkening skies. Only eight more runs were added before the weather brought an end to the day’s play.
