Rishabh Pant Returns to India, Begins Rehabilitation After Foot Injury
Indian wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant has returned to India following a foot injury sustained during the fourth Test against England at Manchester. After consulting medical specialists in Mumbai over the past few days, Pant is now expected to continue his recovery at the National Cricket Academy’s Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru.
Pant, 27, fractured his right foot after being struck by a delivery from England pacer Chris Woakes on July 23, the opening day of the fourth Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. He was batting on 37 when the injury occurred, forcing him to retire hurt. Remarkably, he returned to bat the next day with his foot heavily strapped, going on to score a gritty 54 and adding valuable runs for the team.
Despite his determination, the injury ruled him out of the fifth and final Test at the Oval, which India won to draw the series. Pant remained in England after the conclusion of the series for medical consultations and only recently flew back to India. Sources indicate that the injured foot is still strapped, and doctors in Mumbai have now provided him with a rehabilitation timeline.
Though the full extent of the latest assessment has not been officially released, Pant is reportedly aiming for a return during India’s upcoming home series against the West Indies in October. If that timeline proves too ambitious, he may instead target the white-ball series against Australia later that month.
Pant has kept fans updated on his recovery through regular posts on social media. In one of his recent reflections, he wrote:
“Just wanna tell you one thing which I understand is it doesn't matter how much pain you endured in the past, if you get hurt again it pains the same for sure, just the threshold goes up and you know the process to keep pushing yourself… What doesn't kill you, makes you stronger eventually.”
This deeply personal message resonates strongly, especially given the challenges Pant has faced in recent years. In 2022, he survived a life-threatening car accident that left him with a serious knee injury and sidelined him for over a year. More recently, he suffered a finger injury during the third Test at Lord’s, which prevented him from donning the gloves.
As one of India's most dynamic players across all formats and the team's vice-captain, Pant's return is eagerly awaited by fans and the team management alike. His resilience continues to inspire, and all eyes will be on his rehabilitation journey in the weeks ahead.
