No Regrets: Sam Konstas Focused on Ashes Dream with India A Tour and Shield Season Ahead
Sam Konstas has made it clear: he’s not interested in regrets, online noise, or changing his aggressive approach to batting. As the 19-year-old prepares for a crucial stretch in his young career, beginning with the Australia A tour of India and followed by a defining month of Sheffield Shield cricket, he’s setting his sights firmly on an Ashes debut this summer.
Konstas will feature in two four-day matches in India before returning home for four Shield games with New South Wales. With a hotly contested race to partner Usman Khawaja at the top of Australia’s Test order for the opening Ashes Test in Perth, the teenager knows this is his window of opportunity.
But pressure isn’t something that appears to faze Konstas.
“I wouldn't change it,” Konstas told AAP, reflecting on his dazzling Test debut. “I don't have any regrets in my life to be honest. I thought that was the right method at the time and it paid off. I don't get too fixated about what others say. Whatever I feel is right I totally commit to.”
From Dazzling Debut to Determined Comeback
Konstas lit up the MCG on Boxing Day 2024 with a bold 60 off just 65 balls against India in his debut Test, earning instant comparisons to past Australian swashbucklers. But critics were quick to question whether his attacking style could survive the rigours of international cricket. He’s since struggled for consistency, failing to pass 25 in his next nine Test innings.
Now, after a challenging West Indies tour and with several players in contention for the opening slot, Konstas knows runs are the only currency that matters.
“My method is someone who is an aggressive batsman that likes to take on the game, while understanding the game situation. It’s about trying to score runs and win games.”
“The more experiences I have in different conditions, the more I will adapt. I have to find my method and what works best in each situation.”
Blocking Out the Noise
To stay focused, Konstas has gone on a self-imposed break from social media. After exploding in popularity—amassing over 280,000 Instagram followers—he’s chosen to unplug in a bid to stay grounded and focused on cricket.
“I never had social media until I was 18. I had it for a year and now I’ve taken a break to be more present and try and get back in the Ashes squad,” he said.
“Everyone uses social media differently but I feel now is the right time to get off it. I don’t read my comments on Instagram. I don’t care what other people say.”
Ready for India and Beyond
Despite his age, Konstas brings valuable experience to the Australia A squad. He has already played in the subcontinent, including stints at the MRF Academy and a tour of Sri Lanka. Those experiences, he believes, will help him quickly adapt to Indian conditions.
“I’ve had a few experiences in the subcontinent. Hopefully I can score plenty of runs and adapt to those conditions,” he said.
“It’s about trying to be in the present moment with any game I play—whether it be for my club team, NSW or Australia A.”
Reflecting on the West Indies tour, where he faced a fierce pace attack on tricky wickets, Konstas said the lessons were invaluable.
“The wickets were tough to bat on. For me, it was about trying to find methods for scoring runs in those conditions and understanding the bounce is variable. If I do go again, I’ll be better prepared.”
With a mature head on young shoulders and a fearless approach to batting, Sam Konstas is backing himself to turn heads once more—this time with consistency rather than surprise. The coming weeks could define his immediate Test future, and he’s more than ready for the challenge.
